Bangor police probe assault on 37-year-old woman

Bangor police are investigating an assault that led to the hospitalization of a 37-year-old woman on Wednesday night.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident, according to Bangor police Lt. Tim Reid.

The assault occurred at 8 p.m. Wednesday on the Perry Road.

No further details have been released, including the woman’s identity and condition.

Brewer police arrested a man early Thursday after he allegedly hit his wife.

Officer Rodney Gerald reported that at about 12:45 a.m., he and Officer Jeff Gotreau went to an Elmwood Drive address where a family fight was in progress.

Gerald said that when he arrived, a crying woman opened the door. Her husband, Harold Shepley, 39, of Brewer then came downstairs and said that nothing was wrong and that the officers could leave.

Gerald explained that they had been called to the location. He reported that Shepley again said nothing was wrong and told the officers to leave.

He asked Shepley’s wife if she had been assaulted and where she hurt. Shepley interrupted and told Gerald that his wife was “full of [expletive]” and that he hadn’t done anything wrong. Shepley’s wife reportedly told Gerald that they were supposed to celebrate their anniversary that night, but that Shepley had been drinking all day and had become more and more irritable.

She said he hit her in the head five or six times and that it was not the first time he had beaten her. Gerald noted that her face was red.

Gerald arrested Shepley on a charge of domestic assault.

Brewer police summoned an Eddington man early Thursday after narrowly avoiding a collision with his van.

Officer Jeff Gotreau reported that at about 3:30 a.m. he was driving south on South Main Street and was just cresting a hill when a blue van, its left tires over the centerline, came up the other side. Gotreau said he had to swerve and brake hard to avoid hitting the van. The van never moved into the proper lane, Gotreau said.

He then turned around and pursued the van, which pulled into the Dead River Oil Co. parking lot and backed into a parking space. Gotreau said the driver ignored his lights and siren.

Gotreau spoke with the driver, Aaron Bragg, 24, of Eddington. Bragg admitted drinking six or seven beers, Gotreau said, and performed poorly on sobriety tests.

Bragg was summoned for operating under the influence.

A moose died after being hit by a sport utility vehicle on Thursday evening in Eddington.

Sgt. William Birch of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said that about 5:45 p.m. he was dispatched to an area of Route 9 near the Eddington School where a Jeep Grand Cherokee heading west had hit a female moose.

Birch said the Jeep’s driver and sole occupant, Steffen Manheim, 39, of Mariaville, was not injured. The female moose, weighing at least 700 pounds, Birch said, rolled over the roof of the SUV and off the back. Damage to the SUV amounted to about $5,000, Birch said.

Birch said Manheim evidently had been looking at another moose by the roadside when he hit this one.
