Jeep flips on snow-slick road in Hampden

A Hampden man and his passengers in a Jeep went off the road during Friday’s afternoon snow showers.

Hampden police Sgt. Dan Stewart reported that at about 1:30 p.m. he went to a section of Route 202 just north of Cold Brook Road, where a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee had gone off the road and rolled over.

Stewart said the driver, Kevin Dunham, 18, of Hampden, had apparently tried to pass a tractor-trailer on the two-lane road, but was going too fast for the snowy conditions. The Jeep spun into the wide median.

Stewart said that nobody was hurt, but the Jeep, which belonged to Dunham’s parents, had to be towed away.

Deputy Police Chief Wallace Tower of the Rockland Police said Friday that a rental car, reported stolen late Tuesday from the Trade Winds Motor Inn parking lot on Park Drive, was actually repossessed by Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

The silver 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier, which had been rented by Jude Brown of Tenants Harbor, was picked up by the rental company because Brown had not paid her bill, Tower said.

Brown had told police that the vehicle was locked and the keys were not inside the car.

Bangor police summoned an Orono man after he was allegedly seen stealing a watch Thursday afternoon.

Officer Michael Brennan reported that at about 2 p.m. he went to J.C. Penney at the Bangor Mall, where an employee told him he saw Thomas Daries, 19, of Orono, put a watch in his pocket and walk out of the store. Brennan charged Daries with theft.

Bangor police arrested a man Thursday after he allegedly presented a suspended license.

Officer Dan Herrick reported that at 10:45 p.m. he noticed two men near the intersection of Hammond and Perkins streets, who he believed were acting suspiciously. Herrick said the men had hidden their faces from him.

Herrick asked the men for identification. He said one of them, Brian Fuller, 24, told him his driver’s license was suspended in June. Fuller, who appeared to be drunk, then showed the license to Herrick.

Herrick said he verified the suspension, then arrested Fuller for possession of a suspended license.
