Police look for Brewer man after report of assault

A Brewer man suspected of assaulting his live-in girlfriend Saturday is still at large after he fled the scene in a taxi, Brewer police said Sunday.

Richard Brown, 47, left his residence in a taxi around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. A neighbor who witnessed the alleged assault called police.

Officer Roger Hershey contacted the taxi service and ordered the driver to stop. Brown then got out of the taxicab and was last seen traveling on foot in Bangor, Hershey said.

Brewer police said Sunday that anyone who has any information regarding the incident or knows the whereabouts of Brown is encouraged to contact the department at 989-7001.

A Bangor woman reported a forgery to police Friday afternoon after she was contacted by Merrill Merchants Bank regarding an overdrawn account.

Bangor police Officer Brandon Vafiades’ report said two checks, one for $25.50, the other for $25.88, were cashed at the Broadway Hannaford on Monday, Dec. 29. The checks had come from a starter set the woman no longer used.

The woman said she stopped payment on the remainder of the missing set and notified Merrill Merchants to monitor the situation.

Several patrons at Wal-Mart in Bangor were evacuated late Saturday afternoon after a forklift operator accidentally hit a sprinkler pipe, causing the fire alarm to sound.

The Bangor Fire Department dispatched a firetruck to Wal-Mart to make sure there was no fire, officials said Sunday. Patrons were permitted back into the store once the department finished its check.

A report of a stolen vehicle on State Street in Bangor led to the arrest of a Surry man Saturday afternoon.

A man reported to police around 3 p.m. from the State Street One Stop that his 1994 Ford Explorer had been stolen.

The vehicle’s owner told Officer Michael Brennan he had pumped gas, gone inside to pay and then looked out the window and noticed his vehicle was gone. A witness said the vehicle had headed up Broadway.

Brennan viewed the store’s video surveillance tape, which showed a man circling the Explorer, looking inside and then entering the vehicle and driving off, according Brennan.

Bangor Officer Paul Colley told Brennan the vehicle was found parked behind an apartment building at 143 Broadway.

After speaking with two other tenants, the officers said they found Robert Chestnut, 58, seated in a chair inside the building. Brennan said Chestnut matched the description of the man on the surveillance tape and was holding a set of keys, one to a Ford.

Brennan said he could smell alcohol coming from Chestnut but Chestnut denied drinking. The officer ran Chestnut’s Maine identification and found that Chestnut’s license was suspended.

Chestnut was taken to Penobscot County Jail, where he told a corrections officer he had drunk two fifths of vodka, Brennan’s report said.

Chestnut was administered a Breathalyzer test, which indicated his blood alcohol level as more than three times the legal limit, according to the report. Chestnut was charged with unauthorized use of property, operating after suspension and operating while under the influence of intoxicants.

A domestic disturbance call on Hancock Street on Saturday afternoon led to the arrest of a Bangor woman, who was charged with criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and refusing to submit to arrest.

Bangor police Officer Jason Stuart and three other officers arrived at the residence to hear a woman screaming, Stuart’s report said.

The complainant, a 22-year-old Bangor man, told Stuart a woman inside was “destroying all my stuff.” Stuart said that outside he saw broken items, including three chairs apparently thrown from a window, as well as several dents in the front door.

When the officers entered the residence, the woman identified herself as Lisa Clark. Stuart’s report said the woman appeared visibly intoxicated and continued screaming at the officers and the complainant.

Stuart said he gave the woman, later identified as Lisa Guiliano, 33, of Bangor, a disorderly conduct warning, after which she screamed louder. Stuart placed Guiliano under arrest, according to his report, and she resisted the entire time and tried to kick one of the other officers.

The complainant, who called Guiliano his off-and-on girlfriend, estimated the damage to his residence at $250. Guiliano was taken to Penobscot County Jail, where she was charged.
