HIGH SCHOOL REPORT

Injuries hit Rams, Broncos Unbeaten Caribou, Presque Isle to meet

Both the Bangor and Hampden girls basketball teams will be missing members of the regular starting lineup when the Broncos and Rams meet Tuesday for the second time this season.

Bangor center Alyssa Ogden will miss her third straight game with a broken finger. And Hampden senior guard Cheryl Morris likely will not play after she suffered a nose injury last week.

The 7 p.m. game is a rematch of a Dec. 20 Eastern Maine Class A contest, a 36-33 win for the Broncos.

Rams coach Tom Tennett said the 5-foot-11 Ogden hurt her finger in practice last week and likely will miss two to three weeks. In the meantime, 6-foot sophomore Kelsey Curtis has been starting in Ogden’s place.

“It’s just a challenge for her because she has to play more minutes without her and Alyssa together,” Tennett said after Friday’s 41-28 victory over Nokomis of Newport. “She played real well tonight.”

Curtis had six points and 15 rebounds in a 40-27 win over Oxford Hills of South Paris, and posted seven points and 12 rebounds Friday against the Warriors.

“The Oxford Hills game was the real game I had to go out and prove myself,” she said Friday night. “I thought I played pretty well.”

The Rams also have been without 6-foot center Samantha Spires, who has been struggling with a knee problem.

Hampden coach Ben Greenlaw said Monday afternoon the odds are Morris won’t play against Bangor. Morris broke her nose when she took an elbow to her face against Brewer Friday night.

Senior captain Erin Thompson will get the start in Morris’ place, but the Broncos will miss their starter.

“She’s our best defensive player without a doubt,” Greenlaw said.

Morris had two key free throws in the closing seconds of the Dec. 20 win over Bangor.

County showdown Wednesday

The last two undefeated Eastern Maine Class B teams will meet Wednesday night. What makes the game even more intense is the fact the two are rivals located about 15 miles apart, and were also the top two teams in last week’s Heal Point standings.

Caribou (10-0 as of Saturday) and Presque Isle (9-0) will face each other at 7 p.m.

The two teams play markedly different styles and have different strengths.

The Vikings have relied on taller guards and forwards. The Wildcats are a much more guard-oriented. They don’t have much height, but they are blessed with great shooting.

Both teams posted Heal Point-worthy wins over the weekend. Caribou beat Mount Desert Island 51-41 and Presque Isle topped Ellsworth 54-39.

In addition to the Bangor-Hampden game, Tuesday’s schedule also features a matchup of undefeated KVAC Class A teams as Gardiner and Lewiston meet. In KVAC Class B, Winslow and Camden Hills, which each have just one loss, will play.

On Wednesday, Woodland will look to avenge last week’s 47-43 loss to undefeated Lee. And in another intriguing Aroostook County matchup, Class C Houlton travels to neighboring Hodgdon, one of the higher-ranked teams in Class D. The Shiretowners were a tough 3-3, and the Hawks were undefeated until Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook’s 49-39 win Saturday. Narraguagus of Harrington could be a challenge for Calais on Wednesday.

The two top Western Maine Class D squads in the Heal Point rankings, Rangeley and defending state champ Waynflete of Portland, also will play Wednesday.

Bangor heads across the Penobscot River to Brewer on Thursday in the second meeting of the rivalry (Bangor won the first matchup 53-38). Calvary Christian will try to stop Lubec’s 5-11 Leann Pike, who had a big game against the Sabers in the Hornets’ 56-33 win last week.

The tight race in the KVAC Class B continues Friday as Camden Hills will face Maranacook in Readfield. Defending Class C champ Dexter travels to Corinth to face Central. The Tigers already have logged a 57-42 victory over the Red Devils, but Central likely will give Dexter its toughest game all season. Rangeley heads to Valley of Bingham on Friday and Vinalhaven will be in Greenville.

Key games Saturday include Belfast at Winslow, Caribou at Hermon, and Sumner of East Sullivan at George Stevens of Blue Hill.
