Simpson lifts UMF by Plymouth State

FARMINGTON – Kari Simpson poured in 24 points to help carry the University of Maine-Farmington to a 72-64 women’s basketball victory over Plymouth State Monday night.

Karen Sirois contributed with 12 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for UMF.

Ashley White led the Plymouth State offense with 14 points while Mandi Allen scored 11. Betsy Oswalt and Megan Kane added 10 points apiece.

At Halifax, Nova Scotia, Sara Ricker hit four late free throws to help the University of Maine at Machias hold off Vanier College of Quebec in final-day play at the Atlantic Coast Classic.

Jill Guest led the Clippers with 14 points, while Ricker and Kelly Welles scored 10 points each.

Dranadia Roc paced Vanier with 15 points.

Earlier in the tournament, UMM defeated Nova Scotia Agricultural College 76-35 and fell to Kings College 55-43.

Guest scoroed 16 points in the Clippers’ victory, while Cassandra Vega added 13 points and Ricker 11.

Jessica Wagner scored 14 of her 21 points in the second half as Kings College pulled away from UMM after trailing 20-19 at intermission.

Welles had 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Clippers.

At Brunswick, Alison Smith scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help carry Bowdoin past Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Eileen Flaherty added 10 points in her first career start for the Polar Bears while Justine Pouravelis scored six points and tied a single-game school record with five blocked shots.

Lee Helberg led WPI with 11 points.
