I would like to see Maine enact a new law like the one passed Jan. 1 in New Hampshire on handicap parking. With the new law, if there is anyone parking in a handicap-parking place the driver can be fined $250 if he or she isn’t handicapped.

There is no excuse for anyone taking a handicap parking space if you do not have the plate or the proof. Having a handicap van, it is the hardest to find a place where you have room enough to put your lift down and still have enough room to get your wheelchair off the lift once it is down. With this equipment you need two regular spaces.

A handicap van is easy to tell from a regular van. The door on the passenger side is square at the top and goes to the top and you can see the metal lift or ramp through the window. So, leave room enough to get out and in. A handicap van is not a luxury; it’s a necessity.
