LAGRANGE – A Milo woman was killed Tuesday morning when her car struck a telephone pole on the Bennoch Road.

Ashley Sheldon, 18, of Milo was headed toward Milo when her 1987 Nissan Maxima went off the road sometime before 9:30 a.m. The car struck a telephone pole on the driver’s side door, killing Sheldon instantly, according to police.

“Essentially the car was wrapped right around the telephone pole,” Chief Deputy Troy Morton of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said. Sheldon was wearing a seat belt, he said.

The initial police investigation showed that speed and slippery road conditions were factors in the crash.

A passer-by reported the accident to dispatchers at 9:26 a.m. It took the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Depart-ment, Milo Rescue and the LaGrange Fire Department about two hours to clear the scene.

Power had to be shut off for a brief time while crews cleaned up, and traffic was confined to one lane.

Police still are investigating the incident.
