New England School of Communications

BANGOR – Ten students at New England School of Communications, an affiliate of Husson College, have received academic scholarships for the second semester. The scholarships are awarded to worthy students who have demonstrated academic aptitude.

Maine Association of Broadcasters scholarships were awarded to Chad Leighton of Winthrop, $800; Nycole Spencer of Lincoln, $600; Elizabeth Faulkingham of Deer Isle, $600; and Jennifer Wilbur of Hermon, $400.

The Brian Welch Scholarship for $500 was awarded to Meghann Blethen of Lisbon. Justin Baker of Caribou received the Diane Kasperek Scholarship. NESCom Scholarships went to Heather Miller of Andover, Mass., $600; Ray Harrington of Biddeford, $250; and Alex Quiroz of South Portland, $250. Katherine Tompkins of Denmark received the WHSN-Radio Scholarship in the amount of $250.

University of Maine

ORONO – Eleven University of Maine students have been named National Science Foundation Undergraduate Teaching Scholars, meriting at least a $2,500 scholarship.

Awarded through the NSF-funded Maine Mathematics and Science Teaching Excellence Collaborative, the scholarships support science, technology, engineering, mathematics and education students who intend to become grades 6-12 math or science teachers in Maine.

Based on repeated awards and/or responsibility in project leadership activities, Combellick and Viles will receive $3,000 scholarships, and Gerrish and Peacock $3,500 awards.

MMSTEC is collaboration between math and science educators at UM, the University of Southern Maine, the University of Maine at Farmington and the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance. In addition to the original and principal entities in the grant, the project now involves participation from University of Maine System campuses in Machias, Fort Kent, Presque Isle and Augusta.

The project’s overall goal is to better recruit, prepare and support promising future math and science teachers.

Criteria for the scholarships include: pursuing a career goal to teach math or science in Maine middle or high schools; continuing enrollment and success in the overall undergraduate program; and academic excellence in science, mathematics, engineering, and/or technology, and education; and commitment to participation in MMSTEC professional development events.

UMaine honor society

ORONO – Twenty-two students were recently inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, the University of Maine’s scholastic honor society in education.

Members must have reached their junior year with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and, in addition to scholarship, demonstrate leadership and commitment to education. Newly initiated into Kappa Delta Pi this fall are:

Contradance, art auction

ORONO – R.E.A.C.H. will hold its second annual contradance for hope, along with a silent art auction at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at Union Central. Fiddle and guitar duo Jaige Trudel and Adam Broome of Snapdragon will provide music. Joe Dupere will do the calling. A beginner’s warm-up session begins at 7:30 p.m.

The dance benefits REACH, a UM student group working with nonprofit organizations to bring awareness of global issues to the community. This year the organization is working with Sustainable Harvest International to address poverty and deforestation in Central America.

The suggested donation for the dance is $7. All funds generated will be used to buy materials to build a demonstration farm in Honduras where families are learning new farming methods.

REACH students will travel to Honduras next month to work side-by-side with farmers building an educational facility with adobe bricks.
