About 250 Bangor Hydro-Electric customers were without power for nearly an hour Sunday after a fuse blew somewhere along Mount Hope Avenue in Bangor.
Bangor Hydro spokesperson Louanne Williams said it was undetermined what caused the outage, which was reported at 5:38 p.m. Williams said the blown fuse was fixed and power was restored at 6:34 p.m.
Williams said most of the time Bangor Hydro can pinpoint the cause of an outage, but officials late Sunday were still trying to figure out why the fuse blew, Bangor police said.
An alleged shoplifter at the State Street One Stop convenience store Friday night proved to be a handful for police and was summoned for theft and refusing to submit to arrest.
Bangor police Officer Chris Desmond responded to the report of a theft and arrived at the store to find Officer Russell Twaddell had handcuffed the suspect, Brandon Gillespie, 24.
A clerk said Gillespie admitted to stealing four ice cream bars and was asked to come back into the store. When the clerk said she was going to call police, Gillespie tried to leave again, but employees blocked the exit until Twaddell arrived.
Gillespie told Twaddell he had swallowed several pills, and the suspect was told to spit the pills out.
Gillespie refused three times, Twaddell said, and tried to pull away, at which time he was forced to the ground. Desmond pinched Gillespie’s nose and when the suspect’s mouth opened, pills fell out. Some of the pills were recovered and admitted as evidence, Desmond said.
Desmond also said when Gillespie was being led to the police car, he tried to break free and had to be forced down again. Desmond searched Gillespie and found a knife as well as two prescription bottles. One of the bottles, containing Suboxone, a medication for opiate abusers, bore Gillespie’s name. The other belonged to someone else.
Gillespie was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center as a precaution, Desmond said, and had his stomach pumped. A second knife was recovered at the hospital. He remained in the hospital for six hours and was issued summonses upon his release.
A Deer Isle teenager was charged with operating under the influence after an accident at the intersection of Mount Hope Avenue and Elm Street in Bangor.
William Ballou, 19, was driving a red GMC pickup down Elm Street, while another vehicle, a green GMC pickup, was traveling on Mount Hope Avenue, according to Bangor police Officer Chris Desmond’s report.
The driver of the other vehicle, Andy Hess, 23, of Bangor, told Desmond that Ballou ran a stop sign and struck his truck.
Ballou said he made a complete stop but admitted to accelerating through the intersection. Ballou said Hess’ truck came out of nowhere and he made contact with the driver’s side.
After questioning Ballou’s passenger, Heath Eaton, 21, who admitted to having a couple of drinks, Desmond said he suspected Ballou may have been drinking as well. Officer James Dearing questioned Ballou while he was being transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center.
Desmond’s report said Ballou smelled strongly of alcohol and his speech was slurred once they arrived at the hospital.
Ballou denied having anything to drink, but Desmond’s report claimed the young man was “clearly under the influence.” Ballou did consent to a blood test and after the results were analyzed, Desmond charged Ballou with operating under the influence of intoxicants.
