A car struck a pedestrian Wednesday night in Brewer and then drove off, police said.

Brewer police Sgt. Chris Martin said the accident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on South Main Street near Miller’s Discount Store. A witness said a small sedan traveling south hit a man crossing the road and kept on going. The victim was hospitalized.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Brewer Police Department at 989-7001.

Driver inattention was cited as a major factor in a head-on collision Wednesday morning in Bangor.

Officer Larry Morrill reported that just before noon, Dorothy Hill, 56, of Bangor was making a left turn out of Acadia Hospital onto Stillwater Avenue when her 2002 Buick struck an oncoming Honda SUV.

Hill reportedly told Morrill she looked to the left and right before making the turn but didn’t look to the left again until it was too late. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $4,000, Morrill said.

Morrill said the driver of the Honda, Tracey Meeks, 34, of Bangor, complained of neck pain.

Bangor police summoned a woman Tuesday afternoon after she allegedly stole jewelry from a department store in the Bangor Mall.

Officer Wade Betters said that at about 4:45 p.m. he and Officer Paul Colley reported to J.C. Penney, where security had a woman in custody.

Betters said the security officer told him he stopped Elizabeth Strout, 18, of Bangor after watching her conceal two pieces of jewelry on her person and then leave the store.

Betters said Strout was very upset and would not make a statement. Betters summoned her for theft.

At 8:25 a.m. Wednesday, an East Machias woman went off the road in Clifton and destroyed her vehicle.

Rachel Salyards, 23, was driving a 1998 Jeep on Route 9 when the accident occurred, according to Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Peter Stone.

“She crested a hill on Route 9 in Clifton and left the roadway,” he said. “She went off the left side of the road and struck a pole. The Jeep was demolished and she had minor injuries.”

Salyards was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center by ambulance.

Holden police arrested a Sullivan man on an OUI charge Monday night.

Holden Public Safety Director James Ellis said he was on patrol Monday night when he noticed a car speeding on Route 1A near Copeland Hill Road. The car was traveling at 73 mph, Ellis said, in a 45-mph zone.

Ellis stopped the car and arrested the driver, Jeffrey Layne, 30, of Sullivan, after determining that he was intoxicated.

Layne was charged with operating under the influence and speeding 25-29 mph over the posted speed limit.

Slippery road conditions in Bangor Tuesday morning proved costly for two drivers, police said.

Bangor police Officer Dennis Lally reported that just before noon, a 2000 Ford driven by Joseph Pratt, 41, of Bangor, slowed in traffic on the exit from Interstate 395 onto Odlin Road.

Pratt’s car was struck from behind by a 1994 Pontiac, driven by Kelley Godsoe, 25, of Plymouth, after it slipped on the snowy road. The impact forced the Ford off the road and into a “Park and Ride” sign, Lally said.

Damage to the Ford was estimated at $4,000 and to the Pontiac at $2,500.

Bangor police summoned a Glenburn man Tuesday morning after stopping to investigate a homemade license plate.

Officer Michael Brennan reported that at about 10:30 a.m. he was on Union Street when he noticed a maroon Pontiac with a homemade rear license plate. Brennan said the plate number belonged to a blue pickup truck. He pulled the Pontiac over.

The driver, Maurice Bedard, 39, of Glenburn, said the car was his daughter’s and that someone had taken the original plate. The car’s registration paperwork showed a number that differed by one digit from that on the homemade plate, Brennan said.

Brennan said Bedard’s driver’s license had been suspended since late December. Bedard denied knowing this, explaining that he had been in jail and that others had collected his mail for him.

Brennan summoned Bedard for operating after suspension.
