AUGUSTA – It’s a time to recognize and thank the heroes who voluntarily give their time and blood to help those in need. On Jan. 5, Maine Gov. John Baldacci signed a proclamation announcing that January is National Volunteer Blood Donor Month, set aside to honor blood donors because donating blood helps save lives.

Who can donate blood? Anyone 17 years of age or older, weighing 110 pounds or more and feeling in good health may be eligible to donate blood. For information on donating blood, or to make an appointment to give the gift of life, call (800) GIVE-LIFE or visit www.newenglandblood.org.

The tens of thousands of volunteer blood donors across New England who give of themselves to help others are truly heroes. The American Red Cross hopes National Volunteer Blood Donor Month will be a time to honor those who give blood, and to encourage those who don’t to become blood donors if they are eligible.
