BANGOR – Both the Husson College men and women dialed long distance at the right time Wednesday night as big 3-pointers helped the Braves sweep the University of Maine-Farmington in a key doubleheader at Newman Gymnasium.

The women knocked off UMF 62-54 in a clash of North Atlantic Conference unbeatens and the men pulled away from the Beavers for an 82-73 victory.

In the women’s game, the Braves said Goodnight Gracie with about a minute to play as Frankfort’s Holly Gracie hit a big 3-pointer from the left wing off a pass from Sarah Davis to beat back a late UMF run and cap a 7-for-9 shooting night.

“The late ‘3’ by Gracie was definitely a big one because we’d worked so hard to get back to three or four points and then that 3-pointer deflated us somewhat,” said UMF coach Jamie Beaudoin, whose Beavers are now 10-3 overall and 7-1 in the NAC.

Gracie finished with a game-high 20 points and four assists to lead the 11-2 Braves to their eighth NAC victory.

“This was the biggest game, by far, for us this season,” said Gracie, whose 3-pointer after teammate Anne McIntosh’s free throw made it 59-52 and fueled a 7-2 game-ending run.

“That’s probably the best game Holly’s had yet,” said Husson coach Kissy Walker. “Her shots opened up things and allowed us to do some other stuff down the stretch.”

Most of that other stuff was foul shooting, but the Braves didn’t do as well as Walker would have liked. Husson made up for a lack of quality shooting at the line (50 percent) with quantity as they went to the line 11 times in the final 11 minutes. Husson hit 12 of 21 foul shots in that span and finished 14-for-28 overall.

“We definitely committed a few too many fouls and put them at the line too often in the second half,” said Beaudoin. “And on the inside, they definitely outworked us. We were unable to get the ball to some key people in important situations.”

Husson outrebounded UMF 47-30 overall and 34-22 on the defensive boards.

“We knew we won the first half, but they weren’t going to give up so we had to play even better in the second half,” said Gracie, who grabbed five rebounds. “We needed to rebound better and play good, straight-up defense and not let them drive to the hoop.”

Skowhegan’s Carmen Ballard had eight points and 10 boards. Gloucester’s McIntosh had eight points and 11 rebounds, and Calais’ Crystal Martin nine and eight, respectively, for Husson.

In the men’s game, Guilford’s Buddy Leavitt had the hot hand from perimeter late in the game, canning three of his four 3’s in the second half en route to 15 points.

“We kept on going down low, where they couldn’t stop us at first, and then they started double- and triple-teaming us so it opened up the perimeter for kick-outs,” Leavitt said. “That’s where I got all my shots. They were covering me well.”

Dwayne Ailey came up big for the 9-6 Braves (7-2 in NAC) with 22 points, six rebounds, six steals and five assists. Phil White also had a solid all-around effort with 15 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and two steals.

It was their efforts – and a 49.2 to 36.1 percent team shooting advantage from the field – that helped Husson offset a 51-38 UMF rebounding edge.

“We’re not taking care of the ball and our shot selection is not good enough,” said coach Dick Meader, whose Beavers are 4-4 in the NAC and 6-8 overall. “As a result, we’re going on defense more often and we just didn’t play well defensively.”

Windham’s Steve Ginn led all scorers with 24 points and Luke Nielsen had nine while leading UMF’s rebounding effort with 18, but only five came in the second half.

The Beavers used an 11-3 run to close their deficit to 72-69 with 1:29 left, but the Braves slowed it down and forced them to foul before hitting six of eight free throws in the final 76 seconds and scoring eight of the game’s final 12 points.
