Soapbox Derby

BREWER – Registration for the 2004 Eastern Maine Soap Box Derby Race will be held 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 24, at Brewer Auditorium.

Youngsters ages 8 to 16 are eligible to participate.

The race itself will be held Saturday, June 19, in Brewer. The registration fee is $25. For information, call 989-5199.

YMCA basketball

BANGOR – The Bangor YMCA annual invitational basketball for girls and boys in grades three through eight is now open to registration. Tournament teams are limited to YMCA, recreational department and town teams. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Games will be played either at the YMCA or Eastern Maine Community College. Each team roster is limited to 12 players and numbered shirts are required.

The fee for each team is $150 for grades five-eight teams, and includes a minimum of three games, a championship game to decide the tournament winner, a T-shirt, a trophy for champions and runners-up, and a two-ball contest at halftime.

The fee for grades three and four teams is $115 and includes a three-game round robin with no championship game, a T-shirt and two-ball contests

The schedule is:

. Grades three and four, Friday-Sunday, Feb. 20, 21 and 22. Co-ed teams are welcome.

. Girls Division, grades eight and under, Friday-Sunday, Feb. 27, 28 and 29.

. Boys Division, grades six and under, Friday-Sunday, March 5, 6 and 7.

. Boys Division, grades eight and under, Friday-Sunday, March 12, 13 and 14.

. Girls Division, grades six and under, Friday-Sunday, March 19, 20 and 21.

Orono Hoop Classic

ORONO – The Orono Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled hold its 12th annual Orono Hoop Classic Tournaments.

These tournaments are for boys and girls travel teams in grades five and six.

Boys teams will play Feb. 27-29, and the girls March 5-7.

Each team is guaranteed four games. The fee for these tournaments is $115 per team, or $210 for two teams.

Board officials will be present for all games. For more information, call Tim at the recreation office at 866-5065. Early registration is encouraged because the tournaments fill up quickly.

Teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
