Theft charge levied against Brewer pair

Brewer police found thousands of dollars’ worth of unpaid rental property during a search Wednesday afternoon.

Sgt. Chris Martin reported that at about 4:45 p.m. Brewer police, assisted by the Maine State Police and the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department, executed a search warrant on a North Main Street apartment. The object of the search was property belonging to Rent-A-Center, which had not been paid for since last October.

Martin said the apartment belonged to Geronimo Burke, 25, and his wife, Elisha, 22. Martin said Mr. Burke was very upset and uncooperative during the search.

Martin said the officers found a large TV, a mattress and box spring, a sectional couch and stereo speakers, all of which were claimed and picked up by Rent-A-Center. The Burkes were both arrested and charged with theft by unauthorized use.

Martin said the Burkes owed Rent-A-Center $946 in rental fees for the property, which was valued at $5,674.

Bangor police charged an inmate at Penobscot County Jail with burglary and theft Wednesday evening.

Officer Steve Jordan reported that at about 6:20 p.m. a woman called police saying her apartment had been broken into. The woman said she suspected a man named Daniel Mitchell, 38, of Bangor. The only item taken was a cordless phone.

Jordan said Officer Paul Colley had arrested Mitchell earlier that afternoon on a warrant. Mitchell had been carrying a cordless phone. Officer Jordan went to the jail and got the phone, then went to inspect the crime scene.

Jordan said the bottom panel of the apartment door was broken, along with the lock. Nothing was taken or disturbed except the phone.

Jordan said the phone matched the charging base in the apartment. He went to the jail and charged Mitchell with burglary and theft.

Bangor police arrested a Winterport woman on an OUI charge early Thursday.

Officer Shawn Green reported that at about 1:30 a.m. he was driving north on Odlin Road when he noticed a car idling at the exit of Russell’s Entertainment Center parking lot. Green said the driver of the car seemed to be watching him intently.

Just before Green lost sight of the car in his rearview mirror, he said, he noticed it pull out of the lot and drove south. Green turned around and followed the car. He caught up to it as it pulled onto Outer Hammond Street.

As Green’s cruiser neared the car, he said, it suddenly turned left into a parking lot. Green pulled in after it. He saw that the car had a taillight out, and turned on his blue lights.

Green said the driver, Emily Herbold, 28, of Winterport explained that she was just turning around.

When Green asked if she had been drinking, Herbold said she had only one drink. Green said her eyes were glassy and her speech was badly slurred.

Green said Herbold performed poorly on sobriety tests. Green arrested her for operating under the influence, even though she said she had only had two drinks, and therefore could not be drunk.

Green said a breath test at the station registered Herbold’s blood alcohol content at 0.20 percent.
