We need to put a face on this war. More than 500 men and women have given their lives for our country. The very least we can do is to honor these men and women as they have been honored on public television.

At the end of “The Jim Lehrer NewsHour” there is a moment of silence as the picture of each fallen soldier appears on the screen with his or her name, age, rank, city and state from where they come. I urge not only our local and national TV stations to follow this format of acknowledgment, but the Bangor Daily News as well.

Valiant men and women have made a supreme sacrifice, and will be mourned by their families and loved ones long after the rest of the nation has forgotten them. Let’s acknowledge these men and women not as numbers, but as human beings.
