BANGOR – Several patrons were evacuated Sunday from Gold’s Gym on Odlin Road after a water pipe broke near the facility’s boiler room, causing the furnace to shut down.

Gold’s closed its doors at about 3:30 p.m. when the Bangor Fire Department responded to the call. Three firetrucks and an ambulance were dispatched to the gym, but there was no immediate damage and no one was harmed, officials said.

“It produced a lot of steam, some of which appeared to be smoke, but there was also some smoke because of the proximity to the furnace,” said Capt. Richard Palmer of the Bangor Fire Department. “By the time we got there, most of the patrons had left the building.”

A few patrons remained outside the facility shivering in gym clothes around 4 p.m. and were let back inside to retrieve their things.

Palmer also said the gym’s phones were down because sprayed water had damaged the lines. Employees at the gym worked quickly to call maintenance, Palmer said, and trucks from Northeast Mechanical Corp. of Brewer arrived shortly after 4:30 p.m.

Brett Stacy, general manger of the gym and the adjacent Holiday Inn, could not be reached for comment Sunday, and it is not known when the gym will reopen.
