PRESQUE ISLE – Jon Codrey made two free throws with 3.1 seconds remaining Sunday, breaking a tie while leading the University of Maine-Presque Isle to a 70-68 Sunrise Conference men’s basketball victory over The College of St. Joseph (Vt.)

Lyndon State beat the Owls 80-73 Saturday.

On Sunday, Codrey finished with 34 points and 12 rebounds for the Owls. Fabian Lenox added 11 and Tim Gagnon had 10. Leading St. Joseph’s with 36 was Silas Carnes.

On Saturday, Kevin Trask’s 22 points helped Lyndon State hold off the host Owls. Gregg Rose added 19 for the winners.

Codrey sparked UMPI with 21 and Lenox had 20.

UMFK earns split

At Fort Kent, the Bengals knocked off the College of Saint Joseph 99-73 Saturday and fell to Lyndon State 104-95 Sunday.

On Saturday, Roy Goldstein and Chris York led the way with 15 points each while Bartas Samaitis had 14.

Silas Carnes led the visitors with 21 points and Nolfirs Williams had 20.

On Sunday, Chad Gervais’ 24-point effort wasn’t enough as Lyndon State earned the win.

Christopher Brown led the winners with 25 points and Shawn Burroughs added 20.

Goldstein had 21 and Shane Durost 20 for UMFK.

Husson earns two wins

At Newman Gymnasium in Bangor, the Husson Braves enjoyed a big weekend, edging Elms 63-61 and topping Becker 82-57.

On Sunday, Bill Beauregard tossed in 18 points as the Braves held off Elms. Dwayne Ailey and Phil White notched 15 points apiece.

Kyle Seyboth and Lonnie Branyon III led the Elms effort with 12 points each.

On Saturday, Buddy Leavitt led six players in double figures with 17 points as the Braves’ bested Becker.

Beauregard notched 16 points for Husson. Jeff White added 14, Phil White 12 and Ailey 10.

Richard Fazzi led all scorers with 22 for Becker.

At Castine, Maine Maritime edged Becker 64-58 but fell to Elms 58-56 in weekend action.

On Sunday, Adam LeClair poured in 20 points and Matt Clement provided 16 more along with 18 rebounds in the Mariners’ victory.

B.J. Dunlap chipped in with 10 points for the winners.

David Bostick led Becker with 21 points while Jeff Kotkowski added 16.

On Saturday, Deshawn Hawkins scored 16 points to help Elms hold off the Mariners.

Neil Stewart sparked Maine Maritime with 17 points. Clement tossed in 15 and Dunlap scored 12.

Karen Droog and Andrea Steranto had a goal apiece for 8-10-3 Maine. Kelly Law, Kate Sunstrom and Sonia Corriveau each had an assist and Lara Smart stopped 21 out of 24 shots.

Women’s basketball

UMFK splits two on weekend

At Fort Kent, the Lady Bengals earned a 69-59 victory over the College of St. Joseph (Vt.) but fell to Lyndon State 63-62 in weekend play.

On Sunday, UMFK’s 39-25 halftime lead did not hold up as Lyndon state rallied for the win.

Rachel Maxwell paced the Hornets with 25 points, while Jamie Russo added 18 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer in the final 10 minutes.

Julie Clattenburg led UMFK with 16 points, while Heidi Fisher scored 12.

On Saturday, Melissa Hare scored 16 points to lead UMFK to victory. Clattenburg added 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Allison Lutz chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Morgan Hytko led the College of St. Joseph with 16 points.

The UMaine-Presque Isle Lady Owls lost twice over the weekend, 58-50 to the College of St. Joseph on Sunday and 59-56 to Lyndon State.

On Sunday, Morgan Hytko tossed in 23 points to help the visitors rally from a 13 point halftime deficit.

Elizabeth Alberlacz added 13 and Jayde DeFursne 11 for the winners.

Erica McGary paced the Owls with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

On Saturday, Rachel Maxwell tossed in 20 points and Jamie Russo 14 to lead Lyndon State to victory.
