Nominees for four open seats on the Eastern Maine Medical Center board of trustees:

Nominating Committee candidates

William R. Horner, M.D. – General surgeon in private practice, a partner in Northeast Surgery in Bangor, and medical director of EMMC Breast and Osteoporosis Center. Has practiced in Bangor for 14 years. President of the Maine chapter of the American College of Surgeons. No previous board experience, but participates in medical staff development and physician recruitment. Medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.

Michael J. McInness – Regional vice president of The Dunlap Corp., a national insurance company, with an office in Bangor. City native, who has served on the EMMC board since 1995, chairs the strategic planning subcommittee. Chair of Affiliated Healthcare Systems board. On the board of Phillips-Strickland House. Former member of boards for Rosscare, Bangor YMCA, John Bapst Memorial High School. Rotary Club member. President of the Action Committee of 50 economic development group. Bachelor’s degree in political science, University of Maine.

Esther N. Rauch, Ph.D. – Former University of Maine professor of English. Has served on EMMC board since 1990. Current and previous service on boards of Salvation Army, United Way, Maine Humanities Council, University of Maine System, Bangor Theological Seminary. Ph.D. in English literature from Ohio State University.

Lloyd E. Willey – President, Canteen Corp. Twenty years on EMMC board. Serves now on nominating and strategic planning committees. Former service on boards of Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, United Way, Methodist Church. Former chair of Bangor City Council. Bachelor’s degree in government and economics, Bowdoin College.

Good Governance Committee candidates

Elizabeth Carter Warren – Current board member of Bangor Theological Seminary. Past boards: Acadia Hospital, Bangor Children’s Home, Maine Board of Bar Examiners, Maine Center for the Arts, Westbrook College. Spokesperson for Buddy-to-Buddy Network for Women with Breast Cancer, co-sponsored by EMMC and WABI-TV. Associate degree, Westbrook College. Warren is the wife of Bangor Daily News publisher Richard J. Warren.

Sen. Mary Cathcart – Serving fourth term as state senator representing Penobscot County. Current chair of Legislature’s Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee. 1988-1994 member Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee. Vice chair of New England Board of Higher Education, on the board of University of Maine Center on Aging. Former service on board of Wellspring substance abuse program in Bangor and the Maine Women’s Fund. Bachelor’s degree in English literature, Rhodes College, Memphis, Tenn.

Nominating Committee candidates

Irving Kagan – CEO, president and board chair of Penobscot Shoe Co., 1948-1994. Has served on EMH board since 1984, chair since 1990. Ex officio member of all subcommittees of the EMH board. Also serves on EMMC board. Trustee of Acadia Hospital, chair of both Jewish Community Endowment Association and Beth Israel Endowment Committee. Serves on boards of Carrabassett Valley Academy and U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. Former board member Maine Maritime Academy. Bachelor’s degree in building engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Walter Travis – President and director of Bangor and Aroostook Railroad for 25 years, now retired. Member of EMH and EMMC boards for 20 years. Former chair Maine Maritime Academy board of trustees, former trustee at Husson College. Degree in marine engineering from Pennsylvania Nautical School.

Good Governance Committee candidates

M. Ray Bradford Jr. – Attorney in private practice in Bangor since 1971. Former trustee Phillips-Strickland House, All Souls Church, Universalist Church, and Mount Hope Cemetery Corp. Law degree George Washington University National Law Center, Washington, D.C.

Dr. Dennis Shubert, M.D., Ph.D. – Neurosurgeon in private practice in Bangor 1982-2003. Eastern Maine Medical Center chief of surgery 1991-2003. Master’s degree in public health management, Harvard School of Public Health.
