The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend newborn circumcision. As a Maine citizen and registered nurse, I am pleased that MaineCare is making a sensible choice to stop covering this elective and unnecessary surgical procedure.

With the current budget crises, we simply cannot afford to pay for this outdated cultural procedure that is finally falling out of favor. Nearly half of American parents choose to leave their sons intact. It makes no sense to continue wasting health care dollars on circumcision.
