BANGOR – St. John’s Episcopal Church at 225 French St. invites the community to a Christian Classics book discussion series in February beginning with “The Great Divorce,” a classic of Christian literature, by C.S. Lewis.
In the book, Lewis questions the assumption that “all roads lead to God.” The book’s primary message may be summed up with a quote from the novel:
“There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, in the end, ‘Thy will be done.’
The Rev. Kevin Holsapple, rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church, describes Lewis’ book as having had a “profound influence” on his own faith and work. Part myth, part allegory, “The Great Divorce” provides an opportunity to consider what is most important in life, and the life to come – what Lewis describes as “the high countries.”
St. John’s Episcopal Church parishioners are encouraged to invite friends, neighbors, family members and co-workers to join in reading and discussing “The Great Divorce” at 7 p.m. on four consecutive Wednesday evenings, beginning Feb. 4. Meetings will be held in the library of the Parish House at 234 French St. Light refreshments will be served and child care will be available across the street in the church nursery.
Readers will follow a series of questions that will be distributed before each meeting. Father Holsapple will facilitate weekly discussions.
Copies of the book are available from the church office for $7 each. Space is limited, and those who wish to participate are asked to call Father Holsapple or the parish administrator, Corky Smith, at 947-0156, or e-mail stjohns@midmaine.com.
