United Way invites Bangor pupils to camp

BANGOR – The United Way of Eastern Maine’s Camp Fair will be held 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Bangor Civic Center. The event is free and the public is invited.

Families with children in grades three through six enrolled in the Bangor public school system are encouraged to attend to learn more about the Camp Bangor program. Camp Bangor is offering Bangor public school pupils in those grades a $1,000 scholarship to attend the Maine summer camp of their choice after meeting good citizenship guidelines and volunteering in the community.

The United Way of Eastern Maine, which administers the Libra summer camp scholarship program, has put together a 2004 Camp Directory, which has information on more than 140 camp programs in Maine. The directories will be distributed through school classrooms to every Bangor public third- to sixth-grade pupil during the week of Feb. 2.

Additional copies will be available to the public after Feb. 2 and can be obtained at the United Way office on Sylvan Road in Bangor and at the Bangor Public Library’s children’s department. An online directory is available at www.unitedwayem.org.

United Way also sponsors InfoLine, a community and social services referral hot line at (800) 204-2803 or 973-6815; Camp Bangor; Keeping Kids On Track, a community effort to better the future of adolescents ages 10-14; and Volunteer Solutions, an online service to match volunteers with opportunities at local nonprofit organizations.
