ORONO – Two Maine Maritime students were summonsed by University of Maine police on Wednesday for damage they caused on the UM campus on Dec. 7, 2003.
Nathan Cerato, 20, and Erik Babajko, 20, both of Castine, are scheduled to appear at Bangor District Court on Friday, Feb. 20.
The men allegedly discharged fire extinguishers on two floors of Hancock Hall, destroying the extinguishers and making “quite a mess” in the building, UM Sgt. Chris Gardner said. Eyewitnesses were able to identify the individuals from photo lineups.
Police estimate the total damage to be about $2,000.
All 245 residents had to be evacuated from the dormitory at 3 a.m. during a snowstorm and were not allowed back in for nearly five hours when the air quality returned to normal. The dry chemicals released into the air when a fire extinguisher is discharged can be harmful to people.
“They didn’t know the people in the building, they were just going from dorm to dorm,” Gardner said. The men had come to Orono from Castine to party.
Cerato and Babajko have been charged with criminal mischief, although police said they hope to present the case to a grand jury and seek felony charges because of the amount of damage that was done.
