Autumn’s big-buck contests are a distant memory, and fishing derbies may or may not entice you out into the cold.

For outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy a bit of friendly competition, there’s another option: Van Raymond Outfitters is holding a “Biggest Coyote” contest.

From now until April 30, the Brewer outdoor sports emporium will take entries to that contest, according to Jim Smith.

“Whoever brings in the biggest coyote, by weight, that they were able to take during that time period will win an Extreme Dimensions Pro-Series wireless predator call, valued at $249.99,” Smith wrote.

Multiple entries are permitted, and further details are available at Van Raymond’s gun department.

If you’re planning on entering, think big: The top coyote as of Friday is a 45-pounder.

Penobscot Fly Fishers to meet

The Penobscot Fly Fishers will hold their monthly club meeting on Feb. 4 at the Coach House Restaurant in Brewer.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m., and will feature a presentation by a biologist from the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, who will talk about bear hunting as a management tool.

Black powder event planned

Muzzleloading and Traditional Living magazine is hosting a powder swap meet and winter supper on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Nezinscot Lodge in Turner.

Swapping begins at noon and dinner starts at 6 p.m. Hundreds of door prizes are up for grabs. Tickets are $10 in advance (by Feb. 1) or $12 at the door. Kids under 12 are half-price and those under 6 get in free.

For tickets or information, call David Corrigan at 672-4879 or e-mail him at fmo@midmaine.com.
