PERRY – An elderly man was flown to a Bangor hospital Friday after his car struck the rear of a school bus in Washington County that was carrying more than 30 children, the sheriff said.

The man, who was not identified by officers on the scene, had serious injuries, said Washington County Sheriff Joseph Tibbetts.

The man was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

The accident occurred just before 3 p.m. A second bus was called to take the students home.

Tibbetts did not know which schools had students on the bus.

“The bus was stopped and the sun was severely bright,” Tibbetts said. “It appears that the driver of the car didn’t even see the bus.”

The accident remained under investigation Friday evening. It was handled by John Carroll and Rodney Merritt of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, with assistance from Chuck Matthews of the Maine State Police.
