Sears Island is an ideal location for the proposed marine terminal for the landing and processing of liquid natural gas on the U.S. East Coast. The state of Maine owns the site, which is an excellent deep-water port with rail and highway access. Environmental and safety regulations are in place and can be amended if required.
Our greatest need today to stabilize and improve our Maine economy is to achieve a balance of more skilled and year-round jobs to offset seasonal and lower- paid work. We are losing too many educated and trained Maine people who have left the state for lack of attractive work.
Searsport, developed to handle liquid natural gas, can offer long-term attractive employment – both directly and indirectly – right here in central Maine. This port should be developed now.
