Smith scores 30, helps Royalettes topple Bulldogs

MACHIAS – Ashten Smith scored 11 of her game-high 30 points in the fourth quarter as the Jonesport-Beals girls basketball team earned a 45-39 victory over Machias Monday in high school action.

The Royalettes outscored the Bulldogs 16-9 in the fourth quarter to erase a one-point deficit. Smith grabbed 12 rebounds to go with her 30 points.

Christiannah Holmes scored 19 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds to spark Machias.

Jill Richards and Liz Gomm had 11 points apiece for Bucksport and Alice Andrews scored eight more.

At T.J. Ryan Arena in Brewer, Eamon Harding scored the game-winning goal on a Jake Richter assist at 9:06 into the third period to give Brewer the win.

Matt Grimes tied the game on a short-handed goal 15 seconds into the third period off of a Ben Caldwell assist for the 5-11 Witches. Kevin Kotredes and Ted Kotredes each netted a goal. Harding, Grimes, Caldwell, and John Ambrose all had one assist. Freshman Aaron Saunders stopped 20 of 23 shots.

Jason Huntley scored two goals for 8-8 Hampden and Ian Lee added a goal. Kyle Weiland and Kevin Brooks both had an assist as Rory Woods made 26 saves on 30 shots.

East Grand’s Darius Parker had a game-high 34 points, going 15-for-18 from the foul line. Matthew Scott had nine more.
