ORONO – Flutist Reed A. Gochberg of Surry is the first-place winner of the Annas-Cupp Award after competing at the 22nd annual Bangor Symphony Orchestra Maine High School Concerto Competition Jan. 17, at the University of Maine.

Gochberg, a student at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor, will perform with the BSO at its classical concert on May 16.

Performing “Fantasie Pastorale Hungroise” by Alfred Franz Doppler, Gochberg was one of 10 young people who performed at the competition.

Gochberg began playing the flute at the age of 9. She was a member of the Maine All-State Band 2003 and will be performing in the All-State Orchestra this year as the first flutist.

Currently, she studies flute under the direction of Susan Heath and her future plans include studying music.

Other winners were:

. Second place, pianist Tina Fleur Davis, sophomore, Deer Isle-Stonington High School, performed Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Concerto in D Major – Vivace.”

. Third place, violinist Kevin Jones, senior, Portland, performed Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Konzert in G Major – Allegro moderato.”

. Honorable mention, pianist Lynn Guo, senior, Portland, performed Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Concerto No. 1 in C Major, opus 15 – Allegro con brio.”

Finalists from Saco to Caribou participated in the event held at Minsky Recital Hall, attended by nearly 100 people.

Judges were Juan Condori, Patty Eames, Louis Hall, Phillip Silver and Anatole Weick, who are members or associates of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. More information is available at bangorsymphony.com.
