ORONO – After every game during the Monday Night Football season, John Madden would bestow his infamous “Horse Trailer” award for his player of the game.
On this night at the UMaine field house, when the Eastern Maine Indoor Track League was the only game in town (you could call it “Monday Night Track”), Danielle Lainez would clearly be on Madden’s horse trailer if he were running things around here.
Lainez, a senior, captured the 60 hurdles, pole vault, and triple jump, leading her Rams to their second EMITL crown in three seasons and winning the meet’s top performer award for the second straight year.
Bangor easily outdistanced runner-up Old Town 140-81. Hampden and John Bapst of Bangor tied for third with 44 points, and MDI finished fifth with 31.5.
Lainez didn’t have to do it alone, though, as teammates Amanda Moors and Jesse Warren backed her up in the triple jump, taking second and fourth, respectively.
“Everyone stepped up today,” she said. “I’m glad to be finishing my senior year off well, too.”
Lainez and her teammates also accepted the change of having the meet on a Monday night instead of the typical Saturday. “Most people accepted it as a night meet,” she said.
Lainez feels confident that she and the Rams can unseat defending state Class A champ Thornton Academy of Saco next week.
“We’re gettin’ em this year,” she said with a chuckle.
Bangor coach Maynard Walton was very satisfied with the efforts of his girls, who used the same formula they’ve been using all season: depth.
“We really stuck together,” he said. “I thought Old Town would do much better than they did.”
Kaitlin Dirrig continued her dominance in the 60, blazing to the win in 7.79 seconds. “She’s a great kid,” Walton said of Dirrig. Teammate Kelly Krapf took third in 7.93. Krapf took the 200 in a blistering 28.08, while Jolene Belanger was right behind her in second in 28.34. Amanda McGinn finished fifth in 28.80.
Rod White’s Old Town squad dominated the distance races, including the 2-mile, where sophomore Cassie Hintz blew away from the field and clocked an impressive 10:55, shattering the meet record of 11:04 previously held by former John Bapst standout Melissa Lockman.
“I was aware of the record, but I was afraid I’d slow down and not get it,” Hintz said. She also won the mile in 5:19.61, while teammate Sharon Fuller took the 800 in 2:26.22.
White was impressed with his distance crew, particularly Hintz.
“The plan was to run the mile in around 5:30 and see what she had left in the 2-mile,” he said. “She was feeling pretty good tonight, so I asked her if she wanted to run under 11:10.”
White feels good about his team heading into the Class B states.
“I think we’ll be in the mix,” he said. They’ll be in the mix with a couple of tough teams in Gorham and Greely of Cumberland Center.
Hampden senior Molly Balentine was second in both the mile and 2-mile, with times of 5:28.62 and 12:04, respectively.
