The University of Maine baseball team was selected 12th in the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Northeast Coaches Preseason Poll announced Tuesday.
The Black Bears received 74 points and were the lone America East team in the top 15.
The poll is made up of teams from the Big East Conference, the Colonial Athletic Association, the Atlantic-10 Conference, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the Ivy League, and the America East Conference.
Notre Dame topped the poll with 220 points and 10 first-place votes. Boston College, who the Black Bears play in the third game of the season, are ranked seventh.
The Black Bears, who finished 38-18 a year ago, open their season on Feb. 28 when they play St. Francis College in Miami. Maine plays 14 games in Florida this season to open their campaign.
Maine returns many top players, including 2002 America East Pitcher of the Year Mike MacDonald (Camden), 2003 America East Rookie of the Year Greg Norton (South Portland), and two-time America East First-Team selection Simon Williams (Portland).
The Black Bears play their home opener on April 17 when they host Hartford at noon.
