MONSON – John Bapst of Bangor won both the girls and boys PVC freestyle cross country skiing championships at A Fierce Chase Trails to complete a sweep of the 2004 overall PVC skiing titles. Bapst won five of the eight team races to win their second consecutive girls title and third consecutive boys title.
In the boys race, Piscataquis of Guilford was second and Hampden Academy third. On the girls side, Hampden was second followed by PCHS. The awards ceremony for all eight races and the crowning of the team champions and skimeisters will take place at Big Squaw Mountain Resort in Greenville on Feb. 21.
In Wednesday’s boys meet, Travis Vicary of Old Town led the way, followed by Dan LoPotro of Hampden and David McCourt of John Bapst. McCourt led five other Bapst skiers in the top 10.
Nicole Lavertu, another Crusader, took the girls race by an impressive 2 minutes, 38 seconds, and was joined by five teammates in the top 10. Hampden’s Chelsea Kingsbury and Rachel Yorzinski of John Bapst followed Lavertu.
The small school championship was narrowed to a contest between Greenville and PCHS. Those results were not yet available.
