MILFORD – Amanda York, a sixth-grader at the Dr. Lewis S. Libby School in Milford, has been accepted to participate in the People to People Student Ambassador Program to Australia and New Zealand next summer.
The 22-day exchange consists of meetings with government officials, interaction with other pupils her age, educational activities and home stays with host families. The program is coordinated by People To People Student Ambassador Programs to fulfill the vision Dwight D. Eisenhower had for fostering world citizenship when he founded People to People during his presidency in 1956.
Amanda is active in school and community activities such as band, chorus, drama, cheerleading and student council. As an ambassador, she may earn high school and college credit because of the educational elements in her program. She said she would like to go on this venture into the world to experience new places and cultures and increase her understanding of the world. She is the daughter of Steve and Tammy York of Milford.
Amanda has been active in fund raising to pay for the costs associated with the trip. She conducted a car wash, craft fair and bottle drive, distributed requests for corporate sponsorships and currently is selling raffle tickets.
Those who wish to purchase a raffle ticket for an Old Town Helix kayak, 50 gallons of heating oil donated by Marquis Heating or a $20 gift certificate donated by Dysart’s should stop by the Bangor Mall’s Community Booth on Feb. 17 or May 1. To learn more about the raffle and Amanda’s fund-raising efforts, call Steve York, 989-5840, or Tammy York, 945-4400, Ext. 320, or 827-8575.
