VEAZIE – Inspired by the brand of “outside the box” thinking that has brought such innovations as the Segue scooter to the American public, a team of pupils from Veazie Community School’s Viking Science Club won the innovative design award at the First LEGO League competition.
Team members are Ryan Casey, Amber Hathaway, Jim Joyce, Bill Vassar, Stew Vassar, Mitchell Cole, Shawn Casey, Katie Hathaway, Lee Jackson, Jesse Janicki, Parker Michaels and Jim Vassar.
The award was given to the team for best demonstrating its ability to use a creative design, component or unique strategy of play for the most original approach to solve the Challenge Missions problem.
More than 50 school clubs and organizations in Maine took part in the statewide competition held at Orono high and middle schools on Feb. 1.
The team spent months planning and executing its solutions under the guidance of Coach Ray Michaels of Veazie.
