UMFK splits weekend in Vermont

RUTLAND, Vt. – The University of Maine-Fort Kent put together a splendid second half Sunday while pulling away for a 78-56 men’s basketball victory over the College of St. Joseph.

Lyndon State beat the Bengals 108-101 on Saturday.

On Sunday, the Bengals led 33-30 at halftime but broke it open with a 45-28 run. Chad Gervais led UMFK with 23 points while Roy Golstein notched 14 and Bartas Samaitis 10.

On Saturday, the Bengals couldn’t overcome Lyndon State’s 3-point shooting, as the hosts went 21-for-39 from beyond the arc.

Samaitis led the way for the Bengals with 33 points. Goldstein tossed in 24 while Gervais had 16.

UM-Farmington earns split

At Farmington Saturday, Steven Ginn netted 21 points to lead the Beavers to a 71-58 victory over Mount Ida, but Lasell eked out a 63-62 win on Sunday.

On Saturday, Travis Magnusson scored 13 points and Luke Nielsen notched 10 points and 14 rebounds for UMF.

Curtis Gadles led Mount Ida with 14 points.

On Sunday, Napoleon Sandeford collected 14 points and 12 rebounds as Lasell won.

Magnusson sparked UMF with 23 points and Trafton Teague scored 10.

Thomas suffers two losses

At Waterville Sunday, Scott Chamberlain poured in 24 points as Mount Ida held off Thomas College 82-80.

Lasell posted a 94-73 victory over the Terriers on Saturday.

In Sunday’s game, Adam Rich sparked the Terriers with 29 points. Matt Dillon added 20 and Ryan Conrad 11.

In Saturday’s game, Stern Chamblain and Demetrius DeJesus each scored 22 points to lead Lasell College.

Rich sparked the Terriers with 23 points and James Godley added 18.

Bengals lose two games

The University of Maine-Fort Kent Lady Bengals dropped two games over the weekend as Lyndon State won 59-52 Saturday and the College of St. Joseph beat the Bengals 71-66 on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Hornets’ free-throw shooting was too much for the Bengals to overcome.

Heidi Fisher led UMFK with 15 points while April Allen added 11.

On Sunday, the College of St. Joseph bolted to a 37-22 halftime lead and withstood a Bengal rally.

Fisher led UMFK with 22 points and Allison Lutz added 11.
