Lee Academy, Hodgdon pull out tense victories

Second seed Lee Academy and third seed Hodgdon survived their Eastern Maine Class D schoolgirl quarterfinals at the Bangor Auditorium Monday morning.

Barely.

Lee Academy erased a four-point deficit in the final 1:05 to force overtime and then scored all seven points in the extra period to eliminate No. 7 Fort Fairfield 47-40.

Hodgdon overcame a 13-point Lubec run in the first quarter to oust the No. 6 Hornets 53-52 on freshman guard Brianne McGary’s steal and driving layup with 52 seconds left.

Lee, now 18-2, and 15-5 Hodgdon will meet in Thursday night’s 7:05 semifinal.

In the morning’s second game, Samantha Cole forced overtime by hitting two free throws with 15.4 seconds remaining in regulation and sophomore Jackie Moors triggered the run of seven OT points by grabbing a Cole rebound and converting the put-back.

It was Moors’ only basket of the game.

“I was just thinking ‘box out’ and the ball came to me,” said Moors.

Cole was just 7-for-14 from the foul line but connected when they counted the most.

“Yesterday in practice, coach [Randy Harris] gave us this new strategy. He had us taking a deep breath and going ‘one, two, three swoosh’ before letting go of it. That’s what I did,” said Cole.

Was she nervous with her team’s fate hanging in the balance?

“Absolutely not. I wasn’t nervous,” grinned Cole.

Was that because she was confident she could convert?

“No … but … I don’t know,” said Cole.

Three Tiger starters and two Lee Academy starters fouled out, including Pandas star Shelby Pickering, who picked up her fourth foul with 4:43 left in the third period and spent a lot of time on the bench.

Without her Lee struggled offensively.

Before fouling out with 40 seconds left in regulation, Pickering fed Ashlee Gifford for a six-foot jumper with 1:05 remaining to pull Lee Academy within 40-38.

“When we were down by four, I definitely thought it was over,” said Cole.

Fort Fairfield went just 6-for-12 from the foul line in the fourth period which helped Lee climb back into it.

Moors followed her OT basket with a steal and Gifford eventually hit a free throw with 1:10 left to make it 43-40.

Cole grabbed two defensive rebounds in the final minute of overtime and sandwiched two free throws around a pair by Gifford.

Lee received 16 points and 16 rebounds from Pickering with eight of her points coming from the foul line. Fort Fairfield’s Brittany McLaughlin did a terrific job guarding Pickering in its diamond-and-one defense.

“Our goal was to shut her down. I’m extremely exhausted. And my face still hurts. But that’s what we’re here for,” said McLaughlin, who suffered a sore jaw after a collision, but returned to the game.

Cole finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. Gifford had 10 points, and Kristin Hersom grabbed eight rebounds.

Dani Searles’ 12 points and 10 rebounds, freshman Keri Cunningham’s 10 points and Whitney Langworthy’s six points and eight rebounds led 16-4 Fort Fairfield.

In the opener, the alert McGary stole a cross-court pass at midcourt and beat the Hornets down the floor to lay the ball in to decide it.

“This is great,” said McGary. “I saw the girl [with the ball] looking over to the girl she tried to pass it to and I tried to get it.”

Lubec had rallied from a four-point deficit to take a 52-51 lead when Caitlin Wright came off the bench and banked in a rainbow 3-pointer from the left with 1:15 remaining.

It was her only basket of the game.

Lubec had trailed by eight with 7:30 left, but a rare five-point play on Kristina Scoville’s 3-pointer and two free throws by twin sister Kara, who was fouled as her sister’s 3-pointer was in the air, created the dramatic finish.

“We’ve got a young team and they gave everything they had,” said Lubec coach Mark Jones.

Erin Foster paced the 15-5 Hawks with 19 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Amanda Fitzpatrick had 15 points and five rebounds and Collette Sloat scored eight points.

Kristina Scoville overcame stomach flu to pace 9-6 Lubec with 15 points.

Leann Pike had 14 points and six rebounds. Kara Scoville had eight points, and Savannah McPherson cleared eight rebounds.

Both teams were plagued by foul trouble.
