The University of Maine athletic department announced Monday that head volleyball coach Sue Medley is leaving the program for undisclosed health reasons.

Medley spent five seasons directing the Black Bears, restarting the program as a varsity sport in 1999. Her teams posted a 52-92 overall record.

“We appreciate all of Sue’s efforts in establishing our volleyball program,” said UMaine athletic director Patrick Nero. “She put an incredible amount of effort into this program and leaves us with a strong foundation. We wish her the best for the future.”

Medley guided UMaine to the America East championship match in 2001 when the Bears finished with a 17-12 record. Prior to joining UMaine, she was the head coach at Cornell from 1994-98 and also coached at Kansas State and St. Mary’s College.

She is a graduate of Notre Dame and earned a master’s degree from Kansas State.

“I am proud of all the things that we have accomplished,” Medley said. “We have built this program the right way so that the program can have even more success in the future.

“I was fortunate to work with a great staff in the athletic department,” she added. “I would also like to thank the student-athletes that I have worked with at Maine. It has been a privilege to work with them.”

UMaine will conduct a search for Medley’s replacement.

Campbell out indefinitely

The UMaine men’s basketball team will be without the services of forward Joe Campbell indefinitely, the university confirmed Monday.

The 6-foot-6 junior from Bangor suffered a broken nose during the Black Bears’ Feb. 11 home game against New Hampshire and did not play in Saturday’s road game at Albany.

Campbell started the first 22 games this season for UMaine, averaging 7.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 24.7 minutes.

His absence likely will reduce coach John Giannini’s regular rotation to seven players. The Bears have four regular-season games remaining, including Wednesday’s 7 p.m. home game against Boston University, before heading to the America East tournament March 5-7 in Boston.
