Parker lifts Vikings to win over Hawks No. 1 Calvary Chapel advances to semis

BANGOR – Darius Parker bided his time, taking what Hodgdon’s box-and-one defense would give him for much of Monday’s Eastern Maine Class D boys basketball quarterfinal at the Bangor Auditorium.

But when the fourth quarter arrived, Parker turned aggressor, scoring 13 of his game-high 26 points to lift fifth-seeded East Grand of Danforth to a 73-63 victory over the fourth-seeded Hawks.

“He’s a playmaker, he makes things happen,” said East Grand coach Troy Cilley of Parker, who also dished out nine assists. “When things break down, he can make things happen, either for his teammates or himself.”

The win sends East Grand to a semifinal Thursday against top-seeded Calvary Chapel of Orrington, which remained unbeaten with an 87-63 victory over Van Buren. Calvary Chapel (19-0) owns two regular-season wins over 16-4 East Grand.

The Vikings benefited from a pair of accidental assists at key moments of their quarterfinal win.

Leading just 51-50 with less than six minutes left in the game, Parker drove into the lane and saw Seth Preston open to his left beyond the 3-point arc. He was preparing to make the pass, but lost control of the ball – only to have it bounce off his toe and right to Preston, who buried the shot to give the Vikings a four-point edge.

“I was just going to the hole, and I saw Seth open,” said Parker. “I kind of lost the ball, but it hit my toe and went right to him.”

Moments later, the margin was still four points as East Grand scrambled against stepped-up Hodgdon defensive pressure. Josh Faulkner (13 points, 8 rebounds) saw Mike Hanington open under the basket and whistled a pass that went through Hanington’s hands – and right to Eric Hanington, who converted the turnover into a three-point play and a 63-56 lead with 1:55 left.

That play ignited a game-clinching 12-2 run.

“I knew I had to hustle for it and I went up strong,” said Eric Hanington, who with Matt Scott added 10 points each for East Grand. “I just saw the ball and went for it. I knew Mike was probably going to shoot it so I was going to crash the boards anyway, but when it went right through his hands, I got it and put it up.”

Senior guard Jimmy Griffin led 13-7 Hodgdon with 19 points and 11 assists, while Kirby Sanford and Bruce Currie scored 12 points each.

The Hawks shot 50 percent (27 of 54) from the field, but were hurt by 23 turnovers.

“They played good defense, an effective zone,” said Hodgdon coach Rob Moran, “but you can’t turn the ball over 23 times against a 2-3 zone and expect to win.”

In Monday afternoon’s second game, Calvary Chapel was without its head coach – Ross Bradford was home recovering from a flulike illness – but the Sabers used a record-tying offensive effort to pull away from eighth-seeded Van Buren.

Calvary made 10 3-pointers during the game, tying the Eastern D mark set by Central Aroostook of Mars Hill in 1996 and equaled by Van Buren in 1998.

Senior guard Josh Madden led the way, shooting 4 of 7 from beyond the arc and finishing with game-high totals of 28 points and 11 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Brock Bradford added 20 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds, while top reserve Bryan Miller scored 15 points and Kyle Bradford chipped in with 13.

“We’ve been trying to be real unselfish, no one’s here to get the glory for themselves,” said Brock Bradford. “Team first and team last, that’s been our thing the whole year and it’s worked so far.”

Jeremy Chasse led 13-7 Van Buren with 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Tyler Lapierre added 15 points and Andrew Martin 12 for the Crusaders. Mike Corbin chipped in with 10 points and seven assists.

Calvary outscored Van Buren 13-1 over the last four minutes of the first half to gain a 40-26 lead at intermission. Mike Astle and Kyle Bradford each hit 3-pointers during the run, while Miller added a three-point play off an offensive rebound.

“We came out a little slower than I expected,” said Sabers’ assistant coach Mike Warman. “Our defense wasn’t really going well in the first half. But we really shot well on the 3s, which is what gave us our lead along with some hustle at the end of the half.”

A Madden 3-pointer ignited a subsequent 19-2 Calvary run that extended the Sabers’ lead to 64-35 on a Mike Astle jumper with two minutes left in the period.
