Ballard sparks Husson Braves beat league rival UMF by one

FARMINGTON – Carmen Ballard made the first of two free-throw attempts with eight seconds remaining, lifting Husson College of Bangor to an important women’s North Atlantic Conference victory over UMaine-Farmington, 54-53, Tuesday night.

UMaine-Farmington rebounded Ballard’s miss and got off a 3-pointer that missed at the buzzer.

The Braves, who have clinched the NAC East title and a quarterfinal home game, can wrap up home court throughout the league playoffs with a win this weekend.

Husson, which overcame an 11-point, second-half deficit, got 14 points from Sarah Davis and 12 from Crystal Martin.

UMF was paced by Karen Sirois’ 11 points and nine rebounds and 10 points and nine boards from Kate LaHaye.

At Plymouth, N.H., Jen Webster scored 23 points and Skowhegan’s Tiffany Jones added 20 to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a big win.

The Huskies, now 23-1 overall and 13-0 in the Little East Conference, had five double-digit scorers including Newport’s Lindsey Welch (12), Calais’ Katie Frost (10), and Weeks Mills’ Donna Cowing (10).

Courtney O’Clair led PSU with 11 points.

At Waterville, Marc McCorrison scored 31 points – including a game-tying 3-pointer with three seconds left in regulation to lead the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners past Thomas College.

Matt Clement had 24 points and 20 rebounds for MMA. Neil Stewart scored 17 points and Adam Leclair added 10.

James Godley scored 19 to lead Thomas while Adam Rich and Matt Dillon each had 15. Dillon added nine rebounds and Nick Depalmer added 10 points.
