Each winter, Montes International Catering becomes the United Nations of food, offering the cuisine of a different region each week. This week, the focus is Polish, with pierogis and kielbasa, cabbage soup and stuffed cabbage. Next week will be Mexican, the most popular of the international weeks, followed by French (March 1-5), Hungarian-German (March 8-12), and Moroccan (March 15-18). Night and day

Mark the equinox in style at the Deck House in Southwest Harbor. The Southwest Harbor-Tremont Chamber of Commerce’s sixth annual celebration will kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 20, with cocktails and appetizers. A dinner prepared by “chefs of the Quietside” will begin at 7 p.m., followed by music, dancing, and an awards ceremony for the Quietside Citizen of the Year. The event costs $25 per person, which will benefit community programs, and paid reservations must be made in advance by calling 244-9264.

Trimming the fat

Pepperidge Farm’s Goldfish crackers will be swimming a little lighter come spring – the company announced that it will eliminate transfatty acids from the entire cracker line. The fats have been linked to heart disease, and, according to a Reuters report, Pepperidge Farm is the first major brand cracker line to modify its product. Expect to see the new Goldfish in May.
