Burlington’s crossroads

For a year and a half now we have known there are going to be major changes in our educational system. Unfortunately, time and resources have been spent, not in finding the best possible solution for our students and taxpayers, but rather in attempting to protect the self-interests of relatively few in the SAD 31 school district.

While the student population of Burlington has dramatically declined our educational costs have dramatically increased. Another certainty, continuing on the present course, will bring major tax increases beginning this year.

We in Burlington are at a crossroads. Is it unreasonable to suggest we look at all possible options before we decide which course to follow? I am sure those in the educational community will agree, the more knowledge we have before making a decision, the better the decision.

On Feb. 20 the citizens of Burlington have an opportunity to authorize a study to find the facts. I hope everyone votes.
