BANGOR – Calvary Chapel was so hot from long distance Thursday afternoon, even the deflected shots went through the hoop.

Seniors Josh Madden and Kyle Bradford combined for a tourney-record 13 3-point goals as the unbeaten and top-ranked Sabers overwhelmed East Grand of Danforth 85-46 in an Eastern Maine Class D boys basketball semifinal at the Bangor Auditorium.

Madden’s seven baskets from beyond the arc were an individual Eastern D single-game record, besting the six made by Central Aroostook’s Mitchell Orser in 1996.

The Sabers’ collective 13-of-29 3-point performance was the best in Eastern Maine tourney play regardless of class since the arc was added in 1988 – and topped the Eastern D record of 11 set earlier in the afternoon by Katahdin of Stacyville during its 74-60 semifinal loss to Central Aroostook of Mars Hill.

“They were hot,” said East Grand coach Troy Cilley. “Seth [Preston] even tipped one of Josh Madden’s 3-pointers and it still went in, swish. We knew 3-pointers were going to be a big factor and we just couldn’t stop them, plain and simple.

“We tried and tried. We tried everything. We tried five different defenses out there. We just couldn’t get one to click.”

Calvary Chapel, a second-year school based in Orrington, and Central Aroostook will play for the Eastern D championship Saturday morning.

Madden finished with 31 points and Kyle Bradford scored 24, outbursts aided by sophomore point guard Brock Bradford, who scored 11 points and dished out 11 assists, 10 in the first half.

“Brock did a great job of penetrating and dishing,” said Madden, who made 7 of 11 3-point tries. “He opened up a lot of looks from the outside today.”

That offense was complemented by a blend of defenses that limited high-scoring East Grand senior guard Darius Parker to nine points.

“Our focus was on shutting down Parker,” said Brock Bradford, who drew the head-to-head defensive assignment. “We mixed up a little man with some box-and-one to try to keep them guessing on what we were going to do.”

Senior forward Tyler Gans added 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the 20-0 Sabers, who never trailed after scoring the game’s first 10 points en route to their third win of the season over the fifth-ranked Vikings.

By halftime, Calvary Chapel had a 39-22 lead thanks to 8-of-16 shooting from beyond the arc, with Madden and Bradford each accounting for four 3-pointers. At the break, the Sabers had as many 3-pointers as East Grand had total field goals.

“We were playing what we call Saber basketball,” said Calvary Chapel coach Ross Bradford, back after missing his team’s quarterfinal win over Van Buren due to illness. “We key off our defense, and our defense was strong. Sometimes our offense will overshadow our defense, but East Grand is a very, very good club, a potent club, and we held them to 46, which is a good job defensively.”

Eric Hanington finished with 16 points for 16-5 East Grand. Preston added 10 while Josh Faulkner grabbed nine rebounds.
