Thank you for publishing the article, “Breakfast linked to strong teeth/Findings published by Bangor dentist” (BDN, Feb. 17), about dentist Jonathan Shenkin, his practice and his nutritional research.

Years ago a professor from my dental school pointed out that the true meaning of the word “doctor” comes from a Latin word meaning to teach. In our busy dental practices here in the Bangor area we often don’t have enough time to educate our patients let alone those who for whatever reason do not seek our professional dental care. It sometimes seems a formidable task to get the word out that teeth can and should be saved, and that dental diseases are largely preventable.

Shenkin has taken on the task to further educate our professional dental community as well as providing much needed information to the public at large. His arrival in the dental community of the Greater Bangor area has brought a fresh and much needed approach to pediatric dental care. Having him here is a tremendous asset to our community.
