Caribou bog race to raise funds for Shaw House

Let’s hope there is enough snow so the 21st annual Great Caribou Bog Winter Ski Tour and Race can take place this month.

If there isn’t, you will have to wait until March to participate in this fund-raiser to benefit Shaw House, a shelter for teens in Bangor.

Penobscot Valley Ski Club and Epic Sports are sponsors of this popular family race and tour, and those folks are planning ahead, because they already have a “rain or no snow” date scheduled.

According to Dr. Peter Millard, who is in charge or the race, registration begins at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 29, at Essex Woods in Bangor.

The race actually starts at 1 p.m. and the children’s BogLoppet tour begins at 1:30 p.m.

If, however, there is no snow, or if it rains, planners “will try for Sunday, March 7,” reported PVSC volunteer Pat Cammack.

What is different about the event this year is that it starts and ends in Bangor.

The entry fee is $15 for adults, $5 for young people ages 13 to 18, free for children under age 13 participating in the BogLoppet Tour, $25 maximum for a family and $40 for teams.

So, let’s hope for snow sometime between now and March 7 so all those enthusiastic skiers can do their part to help Shaw House provide services to young people in a time of need.

National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is Feb. 22-29.

The University of Maine’s Peer Education Program has events designed to draw attention to “the important topic of eating disorders that thousands of men and women, particularly in the college population, suffer from,” according to a university release.

Information about health and nutrition, including how to stay healthy on a college campus, will be addressed by UMaine dietitian Laura Honeycutt in “Food for Fitness” at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, in the FFA Room in Memorial Union at the University of Maine.

National speaker Camille Cooper will address “The American Beauty Myth” at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, in Room 100 of Corbett Hall.

Several UMaine students and community members will discuss their indirect experiences with eating disorders in “Outside Looking In” at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the Bangor Room in Memorial Union.

Finally, three UMaine students, two women and one man, will discuss their experiences with eating disorders in “Survivors Speak Out” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, in Room 101 of Neville Hall.

For three weeks beginning Monday, Feb. 23, Brewer Middle School pupils will collect spare change as part of “Pennies for Patients” to support the Massachusetts Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The Brewer pupils hope to raise $850, reports Shannon Greaney, who is coordinating this fund-raiser and service-learning program for BMS Project Reach.

Each child making a donation is awarded a sticker from HP Hood. The top fund-raising class receives a pizza party from Domino’s Pizza and the top fund-raising schools are awarded gift certificates for school supplies.

Last year, pupils in participating schools in Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire raised more than $350,000. The goal for this year is for pupils in the three states to surpass $420,000.

Funds raised by the schools help the Society to achieve its mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families, according to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

“We welcome support from the community,” Greaney wrote.

“Coins, cash and checks can be sent to Brewer Middle School at 5 Somerset St., Brewer, ME 04412.

“I can also arrange pickups within the Bangor-Brewer area,” she added.

For more information about the local project, call Greaney at BMS, 989-8640.

From Ann Carter of Charlotte comes word that the Perry Congregational Church will hold a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper beginning at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the church on Shore Road in Perry.

For those unfamiliar with that area, Carter explained that Shore Road is “off Route 1, almost exactly opposite the New Friendly Restaurant and shortly beyond Route 190 that heads to Eastport.”

While there is no admission fee for the supper, a “basket for donations toward expenses will be available,” she added. She emphasized that “all are welcome” to attend.
