Northeastern women, UMBC men win titles Jentzer turns in strong meet for UMaine men

ORONO – The University of Maryland Baltimore County men and Northeastern University women won the America East conference swimming and diving championships Sunday.

The conclusion of the three-day meet finished with the UMBC men easily outdistancing runnerup Binghamton University, 901 points to 574. Maine finished sixth with 324.

In the women’s meet, the Huskies also won comfortably with 765 points to 606.5 for runner-up UMBC. The Black Bears were tied with Binghamton for fifth with 324 points.

Maine’s best finish of the meet was saved for last as sophomore Brittany Harrington finished second in the 1,650-yard freestyle. UMBC’s Amanda Otis’ time of 17:37.82 edged Harrington by 3.38 seconds.

The most outstanding male swimmer was UMBC’s Brad Green while the women’s award went to UMBC’s Agnes Stanislawska.

Most outstanding divers were Victor Paguia of Boston University and Adela Gavozdea of Northeastern.

In the men’s meet, UMaine senior Jake Jentzer of Bangor was third in the 100-yard butterfly, fifth in the 100 free, and swam the first leg of Maine’s fifth-place 800 medley relay team. The Black Bears’ 800-yard freestyle relay team of Andy Magiera, Zach Gray, Yury Pavlov and Jason Stevens finished fourth.

Maine’s 200-yard medley relay team of Jentzer, Pavlov, Magiera and Zach Weinman notched a fifth-place finish. Freshman Martin Fitch was fifth in the 400 individual medley. Junior Zach Gray was fifth in the 1,650 free.

In the women’s meet, senior Stephanie Smietana was fourth in both the 100 backstroke, fifth in the 200 backstroke, and swam on Maine’s fifth-place 200 medley relay and 800 free relay teams. Maine’s 200 medley and 800 free relays were made up of Smietana, Tal Shpaizer, Kate Abbott and Karin Feldman.
