Most Eastern Maine girls basketball watchers considered last week’s Class B tournament to be wide open and any team’s to win.
And any team did win it: No. 8 Camden Hills knocked off undefeated No. 1 Presque Isle, No. 4 Caribou and No. 6 Hermon en route to the regional title. Junior guard Samantha Wiley was there every step of the way.
Wiley, who powered the Windjammers to the championship with a team-high 12 points in Saturday’s Eastern Maine final, was voted the 2004 Bangor Daily News Owen Osborne Most Valuable Player for Class B Monday.
She joins repeat winner Ashley Ames of Dexter and first-timer Shelby Pickering of Lee, who were named the top tourney players in Class C and Class D, respectively, as tournament MVPs.
The MVP award was established in 1994 in memory of Osborne, a former NEWS sports editor and reporter. The award and all-tourney teams, which are listed below by classification, are selected by a vote of media, tourney officials and representatives of the Maine Principals’ Association.
CLASS B – With a changing of the guard in Class B this year, there are four new faces on the all-tourney team. Maranacook of Readfield guard Toby Martin is back, and she joins newcomers Wiley, Hermon teammates Malerie Hall and Marissa McLeod, and Caribou’s Monica Selander.
Voters had a tough time choosing among the Windjammers’ several standout players, who each seemed to pick different key moments to make their mark. Wiley may have stuck in many minds because of the four free throws she made in the final 24 seconds of a 39-34 victory in the Eastern Maine final.
The 5-foot-5 Wiley averaged 14.3 points in three games. She went 12-for-15 from the free-throw line and was responsible for guarding some of the quickest players in the tournament in Camden Hills’ man defense.
Hall, a 6-1 junior, averaged eight points and 12 rebounds in three games. She logged a double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds) in the semis.
McLeod, a senior point guard who at 5-9 was a matchup headache for defenses, averaged nine points and five rebounds. She led the Hawks in the quarterfinals with 14 points and four assists.
Caribou’s athletic Selander, a 6-foot senior forward, went 13-for-19 from the floor en route to 16.5 ppg. She also averaged 12 rebounds.
The high-scoring point guard Martin had a fine quarterfinal effort with 24 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field and 10-for-11 from the free-throw line. She racked up 17 points and eight rebounds in the semis.
CLASS C – Dexter, Central and Calais once again have players on the all-tournament team. But there were still some new faces as Dexter’s Sabrina Cote and Tracie Eagan of Calais join all-tourney fixture Kaitlyn Leeman of Woodland and returning Red Devil Jenny Rollins.
Ames was once again impossible to stop – who can match up on defense with the 6-4 junior forward? She shot 25-of-45 (55.5 percent) from the field and 12-of-17 (70.5 percent) from the line on the way to 20.6 points per game.
She also pulled down 16 rebounds per game.
Cote’s efforts for Dexter were especially key as teams tried to shut down the Tigers guards. The slippery junior guard-forward averaged 15.3 points and almost four rebounds per game.
Rollins had a stellar tournament, including a game-high 30 points in the Eastern Maine final. She averaged an all-tourney team high of 26.3 points per game, and also contributed 10.3 rpg.
Eagan’s presence on the all-tourney team makes her the 13th different Calais player since 1988 to be an all-tourney member. This year’s Blue Devil honoree, a junior guard, averaged 16 points in two games.
Woodland’s Leeman, a senior point guard, was the Class D MVP last year and honorable mention the year before. The Dragons moved up to Class C this year, and Leeman had 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field and 4-for-4 from the line, as Woodland was upset by Houlton in the quarterfinals.
CLASS D – Lee’s Pickering was the only unanimous MVP pick this year, and she is joined by two players who were honorable mention last year, teammate Samantha Cole and Shead of Eastport’s Samantha Davis, and newcomers Brandi Violette of Katahdin and Shead’s Laureta Ricker.
The 5-9 Pickering, who was an all-tourney pick as a sophomore last year, scored 17 ppg, a wonder considering teams often played defenses aimed at stopping her. She also grabbed 15.6 rpg.
Like Wiley, senior center Cole may be remembered this year for her clutch free-throw shooting. She made two with 15.4 seconds left to send the Pandas to overtime in the quarterfinals, and made the game-winning shot with one second left in the semifinal to seal a win. She averaged 8.6 points.
Shead senior guard Davis had her best numbers in the semifinals with 16 points and eight rebounds. She scored just two points in the quarterfinal, but contributed nine assists.
Davis’ Tigerette teammate Ricker, a sophomore guard, may have been on the receiving end of those passes as she scored 18 points in the quarterfinal. She had a team-best eight points in the final.
Violette, a senior guard for the Cougars of Stacyville, had 18 points in the quarterfinals to help Katahdin knock off undefeated No. 1 Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook.
