Ghiringhelli leads Broncos to win

HAMPDEN – The Hampden Academy Broncos went 7-for-9 from the free-throw line in the final minutes to help preserve a 38-32 Eastern Maine Class A girls preliminary-round win over John Bapst of Bangor on Tuesday night.

Johanna Ghiringhelli powered No. 4 Hampden with 17 points, and Jill Beal posted nine.

Hampden will play No. 5 Mount Ararat of Topsham in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Bangor Auditorium.

Katie Andrle led the 13th-ranked Crusaders of Bangor with 10 points, and Lauren Hunter recorded eight.

At Lewiston, Amanda Bryant tossed in 12 points as the No. 3 Blue Devils rolled over the No. 14 Indians.

Katie Morin and Kelsey Varney added 10 points apiece for Lewiston.

Kristi Mitchell and Katie Bergeron each scored 10 points for Old Town.

At Oakland, the No. 7 Eagles used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the No. 10 Warriors of Newport and advance to the quarterfinal round.

Chelsea Barker scored 16 points for Messalonskee, and Ashlie Busque and Jenna Lettenberger each added 11.

Michelle Barden and Alyssa Bragdon each scored nine points for Nokomis.

At Millar Ice Arena in Houlton, Trevor Graves netted two goals, including the tie-breaker, and one assist for the No. 5-ranked Wildcats.

Ryan Cyr collected Presque Isle’s other goal, and Corey Collins had an assist for the 11-8 ‘Cats. Bryan Fowler made 21 saves on 23 shots.

Chris Howland scored a goal and made an assist for 11-8 Houlton/Hodgdon. Micah Carton also scored a goal, and Kevin Carton helped with an assist. Nic Joslyn saved 21 of the 24 shots he faced for the No. 4 Blackhawks.

Gardiner 6, Hampden 5

At Gardiner, Ryan Jean led the Tigers with three goals and an assist.

Travis McGuire, Ben Kramer, and Dino Grimaldi each had a goal for No. 3-ranked Gardiner (14-5). Grimaldi and Travis Emmons helped with two assists apiece.

Chris Pease netted two goals for No. 6 Hampden (10-11). Mike Brown, Steve Bouton, and Kevin Dunham each had a goal. Lance Ingerson also made two assists.
