Bangor Garden Club

The Bangor Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting at 1 p.m. Monday, March 1, at the Hannaford Training Center, 208 Maine Ave. Guests are invited to attend the business meeting and the program that follows. Film series

The Bangor Museum and the River City Cinema Society will present the first program in the annual Bangor Savings Bank Film Series. “Avalon” will be shown at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29, at the museum, 6 State St.

Written and directed by Barry Levinson, the film chronicles a Russian family and their journey to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. The film series is related to the exhibit, “From Away: Exploring Bangor’s Cultural Heritage,” which will remain in the museum until March 31. Museum houses are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, and noon-4 p.m. Saturday.

Reservations for the film are required and may be made by calling 942-1900.

“Breaking the Silence”

“Breaking the Silence: Truth and Lies in the War on Terror” by award-winning journalist John Pilger will be show at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at the Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine, 170 Park St.

In the video, Pilger investigates the discrepancies between American and British claims for the war on terror and the facts as he finds them in Afghanistan and Washington, D.C. The presentation is free and open to the public. It will be followed by a discussion. To learn more or to arrange for child care, call 942-9343.

BSO Leap Day recital

To celebrate Leap Day, Maestro Xiao-Lu Li will donate his services for an intimate and rare performance at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29, at Husson College’s G. Peirce Webber Campus Center.

Joined by pianist Phillip Silver and cellist Noreen Silver, Maestro Li will play musical arrangements on violin.

Li and Phillip Silver will perform “Sonata No. 5 in F major, opus 24 Spring” by Beethoven. The trio will perform “Piano Trio No. 1 in B major, opus 8” by Brahms.

Tickets for the recital are $20 and $10 for youth. They may be reserved by calling the Bangor Symphony Orchestra box office at 942-5555. Proceeds benefit the Bangor Symphony Orchestra.

Boston Flower Show

The Bangor Garden Club will host its annual bus trip to the Boston Flower Show on Tuesday, March 16.

Tickets are $60 each, including transportation, admission and gratuity. There will be stops for coffee and dinner.

Pathfinders grief support

Pathfinders: Support for Grieving Children will begin its spring session from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 15, at Bangor Christian Schools. The session runs until May 24.

Pathfinders is seeking volunteers to facilitate sessions. Comprehensive training is provided.

The program was founded by Maris Brountas and Barbara Eames. It provides special bereavement support geared specifically to children ages 3-18. To learn more about the program, call 973-8269.

Art at the library

The Bangor Public Library will present an exhibit by Bangor artist J. Palmer Libby in March in the Lecture Hall. Libby said his work is the result of “observation of the world around me, the part that catches my eye and imagination. Form, color and space within the structure nature presents are the main preoccupation for me.”

The public is invited to an opening reception from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, March 5.

Also in March, the Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs will sponsor an exhibit in the Stairwell Gallery. Work by winners of the federation’s contest for high school artists will be on display.

Child care training

The Penquis Community Action Program Resource Development Center will offer a training session for child care professionals, Preschool Development for Center-based Care, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, March 20 and 27, April 24, and May 1 and 8 at the University of Maine Katherine Miles Durst Child Development Learning Center, 113 Merrill Hall. The cost is $10 for the 30-hour program. Scholarships are available. Call Eleanor at 941-2480, Ext. 103, to register.

Maine author

Fran Pelletier, author of “Little Pine to King Spruce,” will sign books at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Borders Books.

Pelletier grew up in Milford in the 1930s and remembers the details in a series of stories that beg to be read aloud and shared. Authentically small town America, the stories are spiced by a French-Canadian heritage.

“Left Behind”

Dr. Tim LeHaye, author of the “Left Behind” series, will conduct a “Left Behind” seminar on Bible prophecy Saturday, April 24, at the Bangor Baptist Church. He will be assisted by Dr. Ed Hindson and Dr. Gary Frazier. Tickets are $30 and must be purchased in advance. Brewer

Kiwanis news

A group of parents have taken on the challenge of constructing a new playground at the Washington Street School. The existing structures are aging and becoming unsafe.

At the last Brewer Kiwanis meeting, Brenda Foley and Tracy Willette reported that $70,000 was needed for the Brewer Community Playground project at Washington Street School.

The city of Brewer has indicated it would prepare the site, and remove and dispose of the existing structures.

Those interested in making a donation to the playground project, or joining Brewer Kiwanis, should call Kiwanis President Jane Newberry at 945-0746.

Bill Newberry, Jane Newberry, Art Monk and Kathleen Harding-Heber recently attended a membership summit sponsored by the New England District of Kiwanis.

Greenbush

Select committee

On Feb. 13, State Rep. Anita Peavey-Haskell of Greenbush was appointed to the Joint Select Committee on Regionalization and Community Cooperation. The committee’s task is to identify barriers and incentives to regionalization. It also will review pertinent legislation.

The committee consists of four members of the Senate and 11 members of the House of Representatives.

Gov. John Baldacci has called for the use of regionalization as a means of cutting governmental costs. Some of the proposed regionalization actions are consolidating schools, libraries and hospitals.

Orono

Orono Thrift Shop

The Orono Thrift Shop and Boutique will hold an end-of- winter sale March 3 to March 20, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesdays, and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays, at the Parker Building on Birch Street. Fill a bag for a dollar in the Thrift Shop, and pick up treasurers at half price in the Boutique.

The shops will be closed for cleaning and restocking for spring and summer from March 24 to April 6. They will reopen at 11 a.m. April 7, ready for spring.
