BREWER – On Friday afternoon, area residents can head over to Brewer for the kickoff of the Penobscot River Winterfest.

The two-day event will feature ice sculptures, live entertainment, a chili cook-off, and many children’s events including a snow creations contest.

Registration for the contest, which has cash prizes totaling $500, are currently being accepted at the auditorium. The contest will be held at Doyle Field from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Only 18 teams will be allowed to enter the contest and a majority of the participants need to be 18 years of age or younger.

The Friday and Saturday events will be held at the riverfront by the Muddy Rudder Restaurant, Doyle Field and Brewer Auditorium. Friday’s events start at 3 p.m. and end at around 9 p.m. Saturday’s events start at 9 a.m. and end at 4:15 p.m.
