Trenkle lifts Bowdoin past Bates for crown USM women, UMM men win league titles

BRUNSWICK – Lora Trenkle of Surry hit five free throws in overtime to lead the Bowdoin College Polar Bears to their fourth straight NESCAC crown with a 51-47 win over Bates Sunday in women’s basketball action.

Bowdoin advanced to the NCAA Division III tourney where it received the top seeding in the Northeast Region and a first-round bye.

The Polar Bears will play a second-round game on Saturday against the Wednesday winner of Emmanuel vs. Salve Regina.

In a Saturday NESCAC semifinal, Bowdoin beat Williams 68-51.

On Sunday, Trenkle finished with 11 points and five assists. Eileen Flaherty followed with 10 points.

Betsy Hochadel tied the game with a shot from the lane. She ended with nine points. Olivia Zurek had a game-high 17 points for the Bobcats.

On Saturday, the Polar Bears got 21 points from Lora Trenkle and 14 from Eileen Flaherty.

Justine Pouravelis scored 10 points for the top-ranked Polar Bears, along with three blocks and six steals.

Williams, the fifth ranked team, was led by 14 from Colleen Hession and 11 from Bridget McDonough.

At Gorham Saturday, senior Jen Webster earned Tournament Most Outstanding Performer after scoring 18 points and collecting a game-high eight rebounds to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to their eighth consecutive Little East Conference Tournament title.

Katie Sibley contributed 20 points and five assists. Jen Webster added another 18 and Tiffany Jones had 17.

Deanne Prior led the Warriors with 20 points and Allison Coleman made 14.

UMFK captures Sunrise title

At Lyndonville,Vt., April Allen of Milo helped lead the University of Maine-Fort Kent to the Sunrise Conference title with 16 points and eight rebounds as her Bengals downed Lyndon State 52-48 Sunday.

UMaine-Farmington and Lyndon State College advanced to the championship with wins on Saturday. Farmington beat St. Joseph’s (Vt.) 66-63 and Lyndon downed UMaine-Machias 68-58.

On Sunday, Heidi Fisher had 12 points and six boards for the Bengals. Julie Clattenburg had nine points and six rebounds.

In Saturday’s first game, Julia Clattenburg led the Bengals with 24 points and April Allen added 10. Dana Lemon had five assists.

Morgan Hytko netted 19 points for St. Joseph’s.

In Saturday’s second game, Rachel Maxwell netted 24 points for the Hornets. Jamie Rosso scored 14 more and had nine assists.

Gill Guest landed 25 and Kelley Welles 11 for the Clippers.

Baseball

Maine splits first two

At Miami, the University of Maine’s baseball team began its 2004 season with a win Saturday and a loss on Sunday.

The Black Bears downed St. Francis College of Brooklyn, New York 8-0 Saturday and then fell 6-1 to LaSalle University Sunday.

On Saturday, the Bears backed a four-hit effort by Ryan Harris over 7 1/3 innings with a 12-hit attack.

Maine was led offensively by Chelsea native Greg Creek, who went 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Joe Hough had a home run and a single and freshman Matt McGraw had a double, single, and two runs. Mike Ferriggi singled twice. Harris struck out six hitters.

On Sunday, the LaSalle Explorers scored six times on seven hits. Scott Gehringer led the way with three hits.

Ryan Quintal had two hits to pace the Black Bears.

Women’s hockey

Boston College 5, Maine 2

At Alfond Arena in Orono on Saturday, Nancy Gillis netted a pair of goals to break a 2-2 tie during the second period and give Boston College its first league win.

Megan Scully opened the scoring for 6-18-3 Boston College at the 14:30 mark of the first period. Heidi Sidewand and Kristin Blundo netted a goal apiece. Blundo and Alaina Clark helped with two assists and Sarah Carlson had three. Lisa Davis faced 31 shots and saved 29.

Karen Droog and Brigitte LaFlemme scored the Black Bears’ goals. Kelly Law, Sonia Corriveau, and Laura Maddin had assists. Lara Smart saved 26 of 31 shots for 10-15-4 Maine.

Track & field

UMaine women finish third

At Boston, the University of Maine women finished third at the New England indoor track and field championships and the men wound up ninth after action concluded Saturday at Boston University.

The Black Bears were paced by Westbrook’s Rachel McCaslin, who was second in the long jump and seventh in the 55-meter dash. Belgrade’s Hana Pelletier finished second in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 15.74 seconds. Claire Poliquin was third in the high jump.

The long jump was a particularly strong event for Maine’s women with Silvia Scaldaferri taking third and Stephanie McCusker of Lisbon finishing fourth. McCusker was third int the triple jump and Scaldaferri also took fifth in the 400.

Maine’s 4-by-800 relay team was second with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 9:10.71.

Other point-scorers for the Bears were Heather Jovanelli of Brewer, who was fifth in the mile; Kathryn Souviney of East Vassalboro, who was eighth in the 55 hurdles; Kristen Vidlak (sixth) and Brunswick’s Janeen Shepard (seventh), who placed in the 1,000; and Palmyra’s Katie Page, sixth in the shot put.

University of Southern Maine junior Kim Brewer also placed at the meet. She was fifth in the pentathlon with 3,136 points to give USM its only meet points. The Huskies finished 29th.

In the men’s meet, Paul Rupprecht was third in the 1000 and Mike Lansing of Lovell was third in the 3000. Maine’s 4-by-800 relay team was second with a time of 7:43.10, Topsham’s Andy Caron was fifth in the mile.

Men’s basketball

UM-Machias wins title

At Lyndonville, Vt., Saturday and Sunday, the University of Maine-Machias won the Sunrise Conference Championship with an 87-64 victory over host Lyndon State College.

The Clippers downed Fisher College 88-70 to advance to the conference final.

On Sunday, Bayi Handy led the Clippers to the title with a game-high 31 points while Jeremiah Johnson added 20 along with seven rebounds. Wayne Clarke scored 15 points and grabbed 19 rebounds.

The Clippers shot 52.2 percent from the field and 80 percent from the line.

Gregg Rose led 18-7 Lyndon State with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

In Saturday’s first game, Bayi Handy tossed in 33 points and had six assists for the Clippers. Wayne Clarke added 15 points and 13 rebounds. Gary Dussard had 12 and A.J. Morgan 11.

Carmine Charles and Jeff Nelson led Fisher with 22 points each. Jofre Cruz made 18 more.

In Saturday’s second game, Kevin Trask netted 19 points for the Hornets. Nick Baskwill followed with 17 and Chris Brown with 14.

Bartas Samaitas scored 21 points for the UMFK Bengals and grabbed 20 rebounds. Roy Goldstein scored 12 points.
