Veazie, Orono police nab burglar in the act

Veazie and Orono police stopped a Bangor man as he left a mobile home through the bathroom window in Veazie on Sunday night.

Veazie police Officer T.J. Warner said that at about 7:40 p.m. a woman called police from a trailer park on the Chase Road, saying she saw a man climb in the window of a trailer. Warner, just down the street, arrived to find two lights on in the trailer and footprints going around to the back.

When Warner went around the trailer he found that the tracks led to a garbage can, just below a window with its screen removed. When one of the lights in the home went out, Warner called for backup.

Orono police Sgt. Josh Ewing and Officer Wilfred King, with Warner, positioned themselves around the trailer and announced themselves. King could see somebody crawling on the floor, Warner said, but nobody inside said anything.

Warner said a man came out a small bathroom window in the back of the trailer and was ordered to the ground by Sgt. Ewing. Warner and King helped take the man into custody. He was identified as Robert Ryder, 25, of Bangor. Ryder had a wallet with a large amount of cash in it, Warner said.

The homeowners, who had arrived shortly before, said they didn’t know Ryder.

A Maine state trooper with a K-9 dog made sure nobody else was in the home.

The homeowners said there was a purse containing bank envelopes, with large amounts of cash in them, in the back of the trailer. The officers found empty envelopes in the back of the trailer, and the purse, stuffed with jewelry and loose change, at the other end.

Warner took Ryder to Penobscot County Jail, where he allegedly admitted to taking the cash. He was charged with felony burglary, criminal trespassing, and criminal mischief for removing the screen.

A Bangor woman wired thousands of dollars to a man in Nigeria after depositing what turned out to be a bad check from an Internet acquaintance.

Brewer police Officer Nelson Feero said the woman talked to him Monday afternoon. She had met a man, called “Simon,” online about a year ago. He evidently told her he had a check from a U.S. company, which he couldn’t cash in Britain where he was. The check was for $5,000 for computer-related services.

The man sent the woman the check, asking her to deposit the check in her own account for him, which she did on Feb. 23. She then wired the money to a man in Nigeria. Simon had said he had no identification to pick up a wire transfer in Britain, but that this man in Nigeria would bring it to him.

Three days later, the woman said, her bank told her the check was no good.

Feero said the woman is still in contact with Simon, and he has asked her for more money. Police have advised her not to send him any.

An Old Town woman’s purse was stolen Sunday morning in Bangor.

The woman said she last saw the purse in her shopping cart at Home Depot, according to Bangor police Sgt. Robert Bishop.

Inside the purse were two credit cards and two ATM cards, the woman said. By the time creditors could cancel the cards, more than $300 had been withdrawn.
