CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami parlayed four walks and three hits, including Brian Barton’s bases-loaded triple, into seven seventh-inning runs as they rallied past Maine 9-3 at Mark Light Stadium Thursday night.
The Hurricanes improved to 8-3, while Maine fell to 2-3.
Senior righty Mike MacDonald of Camden limited the Hurricanes to two runs on seven hits over the first five innings, and the Bears took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth on a solo homer by Chelsea’s Greg Creek.
But the Hurricanes erupted against relievers Jamie Grattelo and Will Carroll in the seventh.
Maine took a 2-0 lead in the second when Mike Ferriggi walked, Aaron Izaryk doubled him home, Mark Reichley singled, and Jason Harvey grounded a run-producing fielder’s choice.
Paco Figueroa cut the lead in half in the third when he singled, stole second and third, and scored on a wild pitch.
Miami tied it in the fifth on Jim Burt’s two-out RBI double.
Jay had three singles for Miami and Figueroa and Hooft had two singles apiece. Figueroa had three stolen bases and Hooft had two. Miami stole eight bases.
Creek had two hits for Maine, including his homer.
Shawn Valdes-Fauli picked up the win in relief with one inning of perfect baseball.
Grattelo took the loss.

Maine drops pair
At Kissimmee, Fla., The University of Maine softball team lost two games Thursday. Detroit Mercy beat the Black Bears 6-2 in the first game and the University of Central Florida shut them out 4-0 in the second.
In the second game, Lindsay Enders threw a one-hitter against Maine and Stephanie Best went 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI to lead the Golden Panthers to the shutout.
A bloop single by Meagan Ramos of North Berwick was the only hit of the game for the Bears. Candace Jaegge took the loss.
In the first game, Jenna Merchant’s RBI single and an unearned run scored by sophomore Amy Kuhl provided the only runs for the Bears.
Maine is off on Friday, but will return to the field Saturday for games against Florida A&M and Creighton.

At Auburn, Chad Johnson scored 18 points to lead the Williamson Mechanics past Eastern Maine Community College.
Daryl Watson led the Golden Eagles of Bangor with 15 points, and Shane Alley and Cyle Arbuckle posted 10 each.
